Upset Bid Falls Short for SHU Men as #6 Cornerstone Catches Fire Late

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Siena Heights men's basketball team suffered an 85-73 loss to sixth-ranked Cornerstone in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Wednesday.

Christian Covile was the Saints' leading scorer, finishing with 25 points, while Jamison Webster and Malachi Satterlee put in 12 points apiece and Stone Beckwith came off the bench to score 11.

Covile also had seven rebounds and Webster dished five assists.

Siena Heights (8-14, 4-10) never led the contest, but did stick around to give itself a shot in the final minutes.

After trailing by as many as 12, the Saints closed their deficit to 64-61 on a Covile jumper with 5:14 to go. Then, the host Golden Eagles caught fire and outscored SHU, 21-12, the rest of the way. During that final 5:14, CU went 4 of 5 from the field and 12 of 13 from the free-throw line. The Eagles eventually pushed their lead to 14.

SHU had battled back from an early setback and erased a nine-point deficit with an 11-2 stretch. Webster triggered the run with a 3-pointer, Eric Cogan hit a jumper, and then Beckwith drained a pair of 3-balls to forge a 22-all tie with 8:48 left in the first half. Cornerstone then responded with eight consecutive points and led the rest of the way.

SHU trailed 38-31 at intermission before pushing back to 40-38 with 16:08 to go. The Eagles (18-3, 12-1) then built their lead to 54-42 -- their largest advantage of the game at that point.

Siena Heights, which has been haunted by turnovers in its previous two losses, held its own in that department at Cornerstone with only eight. The free-throw line was the major divider between the two squads: SHU went 19 of 32 (59.4 percent) while CU was 30 of 39 (76.9 percent).

Wes Hudson was the Eagles' leading scorer with 28 points. Ben Lanning and Jake Plite added 12 points apiece while Anthony Allen made six assists.

The Saints will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 29, with an 8 p.m. WHAC home contest against Indiana Tech.
