Softball Claims 13 WHAC Awards

ADRIAN, Mich. – Three Siena Heights softball players were named to All-WHAC teams when the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference announced the yearly honors following the opening games of the league tournament on Wednesday evening. Freshman Courtnee Chappetta joined senior Kelsey Uhl on the All-WHAC First-Team while Sam Hill was named to the second team. Hill added an All-Academic distinction along with Kiley Elbaor, Lily Guerra, Alexis Hirst, Julia Hogston, Janelle Krueger, Milah Loose, Brenna Nurenberg, Lyndsey Pena, Hannah Pennington, and Sam Spicer. Spicer was also the Saint representative on the Champions of Character squad.

Chappetta leads all SHU starters with a .407 batting average. She is second on the team in hits with 50 while leading with 28 RBIs and six home runs. She has a team-high two triples to go with 11 doubles all as a first-year player for Siena Heights. Her batting average ranks sixth in the league while her home run total ranks eighth.

"Courtnee has had a really solid year for us," said head coach Laura Klutsarits. "She has not only tackled a new position this year but also been a middle of the lineup hitter for us from the start of the season to the end. To come in and do what she has done as a first-year player has been a lot of fun to watch.  We are very excited to see her continue to progress through the remainder of her career here, the future is very bright for her."

Uhl has been a big hitter for the Saints this season as well. She has a .394 average, four home runs, 27 RBIs, seven doubles, and 39 hits. Uhl also leads the team with 118.0 innings pitched with 78 strikeouts. Her batting average is the ninth-best in the WHAC.

"Kelsey has hit the ball hard more consistently this year than at any time in her career," stated coach Klutsarits. "She has had countless clutch RBI and hits, oftentimes doing so at a time when we were trailing, or when we had just given up some runs. She has been a very talented player for us over her career here and we are happy to see her get this recognition in her final year of ball."

Hill finished her fourth year as the lead-off hitter for SHU. She leads the team with 51 hits while earning a .378 average, two doubles, 22 stolen bases, and the first home runs of her career with three total. Hill is sixth in the WHAC in stolen bases and eighth in hits.

"Sam has been an often overlooked player when it comes to these types of awards," said Klutsarits. "We can argue that her numbers stack up with any leadoff hitter in the conference. Throughout her career, when she gets on base, good things happen, that is no different this year. We are happy she has received this recognition as well, and have enjoyed having her at the top of our lineup for the past four years."
