Softball Unable To Quiet UMD Bats, Drops Pair

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights softball team dropped a pair of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contests to Michigan-Dearborn, 9-7 and 16-9, at Christensen Memorial Softball Field on Saturday.

Taylor Hayes, Megan Jones and Morgan Warfield had 2-for-4 games with two RBI each in the opener. Jones homered and Hayes doubled.

Also, Mariah Boss went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Skylar Crenshaw added a double.

Kelsie Abbott was the losing pitcher. She recorded four strikeouts and one walk in seven innings of work. Of the nine runs scored against Abbott, seven were earned.

Hayes put SHU on the board with an RBI single in the first inning. The visiting Wolverines answered with two runs in the second, two in the third and five in the fourth to build a 9-1 advantage.

The Saints struck back for two in the fifth as Warfield drove in a pair of runs with a single. SHU tacked on six more in the sixth -- an RBI single from Boss, an RBI double from Hayes and a two-run homer from Jones -- to finish out the scoring.

Jessie Thueme went 2-for-4 with a grand slam for UMD. Makenzie Trowbridge added a 3-for-4 outing with two runs and one RBI in support of winning pitcher Kayla Goodwin.

Goodwin gave up four runs on seven hits while recording one strikeout, five walks and one hit batsman. She started in the circle for UMD before she was lifted for a reliever, but eventually re-entered and finished the game herself.

In 16-9 game two, the squads traded big innings: UMD had an eight-run third while SHU had a seven-run fifth.

Kyndle Wolfinger finished 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI for the Saints. Hannah Bleikamp added a double and two runs, Warfield scored twice and Skylar Crenshaw collected two RBI.

Hayes got the Saints on the board in the first with a solo homer. UMD then came back with three runs in the second and eight in the third.

A Bleikamp RBI groundout trimmed the Dearborn lead in the fourth, but the visitors extended their advantage to 12-2 in the fifth.

Then, SHU pished across seven, getting an RBI single from Abbott, a sacrifice fly from Jones, a bases-loaded walk by Bleikamp, a two-run single by Crenshaw and a two-run triple by Wolfinger.

The big inning helped the hosts trim their deficit to 12-9, but that is as close as SHU would get. UMD scored the game's final four runs.

Warfield was the losing pitcher. Abbott tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Abby Jewell earned the win while Goodwin fired 2 1/3 shutout frames to grab the save.

Valerie Bertani led the Wolverines with a 4-for-4 game with two doubles, three runs and two RBI. Jordan Ewald went 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBI.

The Saints will return to action on Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. WHAC doubleheader against Concordia.
