
ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights men's volleyball team survived a five-set thriller to hold off Calumet for a 3-2 victory in non-conference action at the SHU Fieldhouse on Tuesday. Set scores were 23-25, 25-16, 25-21, 14-25, 16-14.
Daniel Rua had 16 kills and Jonathan Stovring put down nine for the Saints (3-4). Zak Tucker totaled 33 assists, five aces and five blocks.
Also for SHU, Yeban Youn made 11 digs and Andrew Sliwinski was in on five blocks.
Siena Heights never led the first set and then never trailed during the second.
After the Saints pulled into a 10-10 tie during the first, CCSJ (1-7) pulled away with a 5-0 run and led the rest of the way.
Siena Heights opened the second with three straight points and eventually finished the set on a 4-0 run.
During the third, Siena Heights took the lead with a 5-point streak to break a 9-all tie. The Crimson Wave answered with a dominant fourth to push the match to a fifth set.
SHU rolled out to an 8-3 lead in the fifth before the Wave stormed back with a 10-3 stretch of its own. Trailing 13-11, the Saints took 5 of 6 points to secure the win.
Siena Heights will return to competition on Friday with a 7 p.m. match at WHAC opponent Mount Vernon Nazarene.
