Baseball Brooms Doubleheader at Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team swept a WHAC doubleheader at Aquinas on Saturday, winning by scores of 9-6 and 14-11.

The Saints, winners of five straight games, will return to play on Tuesday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Cleary.

Game one: Siena Heights 9, Aquinas 6
Gino Hutchinson, Adam Wilding, Nick Tiller (triple), Brayden Hill (homer) and Cole Mason had two-hit games for the Saints. Tiller and Hill had two RBI each. Hill scored twice.

Brandon Biggerstaff was the winning pitcher, allowing four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. He recorded seven strikeouts and three walks.

Matt Love threw 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball to earn the save.

SHU (13-13, 7-3) took a 7-0 lead through the first three innings and held on the rest of the way.

Tiller, Kenny Layman and Brock Olmstead had RBI singles in Siena Heights' four-run first inning. Wilding added an RBI single in the second and, in the third, Tiller had an RBI triple and Hill hit an RBI single.

The Saints plated a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Hutchinson. Hill blasted a solo home run in the seventh.

Game two: Siena Heights 14, Aquinas 11
Two-hit games were provided by Hutchinson (double), Wilding (double), Tiller, Hill, Cole VanWasshenova (triple), Thomas Bakoway (double) and Aidan Grinstead. Bakoway was the top run producer with five RBI.

Hutchinson collected three RBI while Wilding and VanWasshenova drove in two runs apiece. Hutchinson scored four times, Wilding scored three runs and Hill and Mason scored twice.

Luc Olson was the winning pitcher. He gave up three runs on five hits and totaled two strikeouts and three walks.

Siena Heights built a 7-2 lead before the teams combined for 16 runs in the final two frames.

Hutchinson put SHU ahead with a two-run single and Wilding followed with a two-run double in the Saints' four-run third.

Bakoway had an RBI single in the fifth. In the seventh, Hutchinson had an RBI double and later scored on an error.

The Saints plated three runs in the eighth and fourth in the ninth. VanWasshenova smashed a two-run triple in the eighth before Bakoway drew a bases-loaded walk.

During the ninth, Wilding scored on a wild pitch and Bakoway hammered a three-run double.
