Baseball Splits WHAC Doubleheader Versus Aquinas

ADRIAN, Mich. – Siena Heights baseball hosted Aquinas College in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The teams split the series as SHU won game one 5-1 while Aquinas took game two 18-6.

Game 1 SHU 5, Aquinas 1 – 7 innings

Adam Wilding led the Navy and yellow, batting 2-for-3 for game one. Wilding brought in two runs while also scoring once. Haydn Smith batted .500 while running home once. Matthew Love went 1-for-1 and tallied one run. Cole VanWasshenova and Cameron Hammer went 1-for-4 from the batter's box and put one run on the board. Parker Mabe (2-for-3), Jakob Scroggie (1-for-3), and Kenny Layman (1-for-3) collected one RBI. Pitcher Zach Bloom (W, 3-5) saw action in six innings facing 26 opponents, only allowing one earned run and sitting down three batters. Layman would pitch the seventh inning to finish the game seeing three batters and striking out two.

SHU put one run on the board early in the bottom of the first, as Layman brought Smith home with an RBI single to the right side. The third inning saw three more runs for the hometown Saints as Wilding hit a two-RBI double to right-center, sending Hammer and VanWasshenvoa home. Mabe was up next in the lineup and hit an RBI single down the left-field line to let Wilding cross home plate and extend the lead 4-0.

Starting the top of the fifth, Aquinas reached base on a walk and found home after a double to center field, making the score 4-1. Love pinch hit for Cody Henderson and reached base on a single. Scroggie knocked out an RBI single to bring in Love to end the game 5-1.

Game 1 SHU 6, Aquinas 18 – 9 innings

Leading for Siena Heights was Cole VanWasshenvoa, who put up two runs batting .500 from the box and collected one RBI. Hammer (1-for-4) crossed home plate once and tallied two RBIs. Smith batted 1.000 going 3-for-3 during game two while scoring once. Scroggie (1-for-4) put one run on the board for the Saints and brought in one run. Love reached home plate once during the game, and Layman tallied one RBI. Parker Swartz started on the mound for SHU, pitching 4.2 innings to strike out three batters. Brad South (L, 1-1) allowed four runs during game two, while Jarret Cousino finished the game for Siena, striking out two opponents.

The home team would be the first to put runs on the board as VanWasshenova crossed home on a passed ball in the first. The visiting Saints would score twice in the second to take the lead and make the score 2-1. The bottom of the third saw a strong offensive showing for SHU, who brought in five runs. First was Love, who ran home on a single from Scroggie. Smith followed after VanWasshenova, singled to left-center. Then, Hammer stepped into the batter box, knocking a two-RBI triple towards center field and reaching home on Layman's hit to retake the lead, 6-2.

Unfortunately, the visiting Aquinas College Saints would erase the SHU lead and take control in the sixth inning scoring seven runs. The visiting team would score six additional runs to end the game 18-6.
