Saints Split At Home Against Roosevelt

ADRIAN, Mich. – In a Sunday battle at home, Siena Heights baseball split with the visiting Roosevelt University Lakers during the doubleheader. The opening game saw a win for the Saints of 3-2 while and the second game ended in favor of the Lakers 7-0. 

Game 1: Siena Heights 3, Roosevelt 2 – 7 innings

Cole VanWasshenova led Siena batting going 1-for-3 from the plate, scoring one run, and bringing in two. VanWasshenova hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to bring in Anthony Scali, collecting the two runs needed to win the game. Kenny Layman went 1-for-2 during game one and scored one run. Jakob Scroggie hit a perfect 2-for-2 and tallied one RBI for the home team. Christian Jabiro pitched five innings for SHU, sitting down five batters and only allowing four hits. Brad South (W, 1-0) saw action in one inning to collect his first win of the season while only allowing one hit.

Roosevelt was the first to bring in a run, scoring in the first inning. Siena Heights would respond with a single to get Layman on base and an RBI single from Scroggie to bring Layman home. Strong defense from both teams would keep the score tied at 1-1 until the top of the seventh.

The Lakers saw one run across home plate in the top of the seventh to go up 2-1 over the Saints. Cody Henderson reached first with one out at the bottom of the seventh and was relieved by Scali as a pinch-runner. VanWasshenova stepped up to bat with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to hit a walk-off, two-run home run to win the game.

Game 1: Siena Heights 0, Roosevelt 7 – 7 innings

Kenny Layman was 1-for-1 during game two as Parker Mabe and Haydn Smith went 1-for-3. Jarrett Cousino started on the mound for SHU, facing 29 batters in five innings, allowing six hits, and striking out three opponents. Andy Stoll relieved Cousino to pitch two innings seeing seven batters and sitting down four.

The first inning saw two scores from the visiting team, while the second saw one run. After that, Siena Heights struggled to find a rhythm offensively and saw a score of 5-0 in the third inning. 

Getting their bats going, SHU put two men on base during the bottom of the 4th-inning. Unfortunately, the home team would fail to bring any runs home. The Saints would leave three more runners on base and end the game with a 7-0 result.
