Baseball Splits a Pair with Cleary to Finish Weekend Series 2-2

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Siena Heights baseball team split the second set of double-headers with Cleary, on Saturday, wining game one 10-1 before falling 5-4 in game two. SHU finished the weekend series with Cleary 2-2.

The bats came alive in the first inning for the Saints, starting with a double from Freddy Jehle and leaving with eight hits and six runs as SHU went through the full lineup. It was quiet until the third as a Brendan Green single brought in two runners to bring the Saints lead to 8-0. In the fourth, another Jehle single brought sent two runners home, giving SHU the double-digit lead. Scoring the lone run for Cleary was Jordan Leyder, sending one over the fence in the fifth inning.

Leading the Saints (9-19) was Freddy Jehle, hitting 4-for-4 with three RBIs while Green earned two hits and three RBIs. The lone Cougar to earn two hits was Leyder as three Cougars managed a solo shot.

Pitching the whole game for the Saints to earn the win was Reid Olmstead, earning eight strikeout while allowing only five hits and a run. Starting on the mound for the Cougars was Irwing Guel, allowing six hits and six earned runs prior to being relieved in the first by Kendall Flaugher, who allowed five hits and two runs. Closing out the game for Cleary was David Harlukowicz, allowing one hit and two runs.

Game two started slowly, until the third inning when Cleary added on two runs. A string of base hits helped SHU tie it up 2-2 heading into the fourth inning. The Cougars (8-13) found some life in the top of the fifth, earning two runs to take a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, a home run by Brendan Green started off the inning, it was followed by a couple of hits but it wasn't enough as SHU still trailed 4-3. Cleary added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, which proved necessary as the Saints earned a run and had runners on second and third when the final out was called.

Brendan Baker went 4-for-4 in game two, earning two RBIs to lead the Saints. John Grable managed three hits for Cleary as two other Cougars had two hits.

Taylor Acquista started on the hill for the Saints and took the loss, throwing 4.2 innings and struck out four as four runs, three earned, scored. He was relieved by Wyatt West who allowed one run while striking out two. Ryan Schaffer threw the first five innings for the Cougars to earn the win, allowing six hits and two earned runs along with striking out two batters. James Edwards relieved him in the bottom of the sixth and earned the save, striking out two batters while allowing two runs.

Siena Heights will return to action on Saturday as the Saints host Michigan-Dearborn in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action.
