Baseball Splits Two in Day One of Warner Tournament

LAKE WALES, Fla. -- The Siena Heights baseball team began play in the Warner University Tournament on Thursday, taking on St. Francis (Ill.) and the tournament host, Warner. The Saints dropped game one 9-6 to the Fighting Saints of St. Francis before defeating Warner, 6-5.

GAME ONE: Siena Heights 6, St. Francis 9
Siena Heights scored first, rounding the bases twice in the second inning and taking the lead early. St. Francis (5-10 overall) scored one of their own in the frame but scored another five in the third. In the sixth, SHU was able to tie the ball game at six a piece. In the bottom of the sevent USF hit a walk off home run to end the game in dramatic fashion. 

Freddy Jehle led the Saints (6-15 overall) at the plate, batting 2-for-3 also recording one RBI. Thomas Lindeman and Brenden Baker each finished with a team high, two RBI's. Riley Guntrip hit a solo homer in the top of the sixth for the only SHU home run. 

Starting on the mound was Tristan Roth, pitching six innings. Roth allowed eight hits and seven runs and struck out two, before being relieved by Jayson Cleghorn who pitched the final inning of the ball game and suffered the loss. 

GAME TWO: Siena Heights 6, Warner 5
The Saints jumped out to a quick lead scoring four in the second inning. Neither team scored again until the fifth, where Warner was able to tie the ball game at four each. The Royals (14-9 overall) scored one run in the sixth, but the Saints answered scoring two of their own and regained the lead. The score remained the same through the seventh and SHU walked away with the victory. 

Jacob Jones finished 2-for-3 at the plate, also scoring one run and recording one RBI. Freddy Jehle batted 2-for-4 while contributing one run and one RBI. Starting pitcher, Reid Olmstead went the distance, pitching the full seven innings and earning the win. Olmstead allowed six hits, five runs and struck out three.

The Saints will continue play in the Warner University Tournament on Friday, Mar. 9. SHU will take on Spring Arbor at 12:30 p.m. and Mt. Vernon Nazarene at 4:30 p.m.
