Baseball Drops Pair in Second Day of WU Invitational Action

LAKE WALES, Fla. – The Siena Heights baseball team fell to Saint Francis (Ill.) 7-4 and Warner (Fla.) 5-4 in the second day of competition at the Warner University Invitational, on Friday.

In the first game of the day, the Fighting Saints opened up the scoring in the third inning as they sent five runners home. SHU responded with two runs in the top of the fourth and added one in the fifth and seventh innings, but it wasn't enough as USF claimed the game 7-4.

For the Saints, Freddy Jehle, Alex Robbins and Brendan Green each earned two hits, Jehle and Robbins making it home as Green earned and RBI.

On the hill for SHU was Kyle Kuhr who threw the entire game. He allowed 12 hits, seven earned runs and struck out two batters. Winning pitcher Matt Degraw only struck out one Saint, allowing eight hits and three runs.

SHU was named the home team against Warner for the second game. The Royals scored first, sending one runner home in the top of the first. Siena Heights responded in the bottom of the third, tying the game 1-1 as Brenden Baker sent Jehle home.

A three-run homer put the Royals on top in top of the fifth, 4-1. A single from John Watts sent Green and Matthew Bondy home to close the gap, 4-3. WU put an insurance run on the board in the top of the seventh, making it 5-3. Carson Wlad hit a two-out double and was sent in by a Royal error to give the Saints some life, but it wasn't enough as Warner threw out Robbins with the tying run on second.

Jehle again earned two hits for SHU in game two and was joined by Wlad and John Watts.

Starting on the mound for the Saints was Reid Olmstead, who struck out five batters and allowed four runs, three of them earned. He was relieved by Ben Finn in the sixth inning, striking out two as another Royal was caught stealing. Closing the game for SHU was Chris McKiddie, giving up one run in the final inning of action to take the loss.

Tyler Perkins earned the win for WU, with five strikeouts and three earned runs against and three hits. With the save was Ronnie Filipkowski, pitching for two innings and striking out two batters.

Siena Heights will continue in the Warner University Tournament on Saturday. Game time and opponent will be determined at the conclusion of today's contests. Check out shusaints.com for updates.
