Baseball Takes Split Against #24 UNOH

LIMA, Ohio -- The Siena Heights baseball team split a doubleheader with Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opponent Northwestern Ohio on Saturday. The Saints won game one, 9-4, but then dropped game two, 3-2.

Trailing 4-0, the Saints erupted for a seven-run sixth inning and led the rest of the way.

Freddy Jehle led the SHU offense, batting 4-for-6 with a double, run and RBI. Austin Hauck and Zack Dunlop added 3-for-5 games; Hauck doubled and scored twice while Dunlop collected an RBI.

Also for SHU (14-18, 9-10), Dennis Sharp Jr. went 2-for-5 with a run and RBI.

Thomas McCarter was the winning pitcher. In 6 2/3 innings, he gave up four runs on eight hits while recording one strikeout. Justin McPherson tossed the final 2 1/3 frames in shutout fashion, finishing with three strikeouts, one walk and one hit batsman.

In the Siena Heights sixth, Joe Williams had an RBI single and Drew Milligan and Eric Henderson drew bases-loaded walks. This set the stage for Jehle's game-tying RBI single. Nathaniel Kraus ripped a two-run single to give SHU the lead. Dunlop added an RBI single for the Saints' seventh run.

The Saints tacked on single runs in the seventh and eighth. Travis Stricklin walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-base error in the seventh. Sharp had an RBI single in the eighth.

James Cardona led the UNOH offense, going 2-for-4 with a homer, double and three RBI. Brett Atkins also went 2-for-4, Jose Cruz tripled and Jhonniel Alvarez doubled.

Brodie Mitchell was the losing pitcher. He allowed six runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He finished with two strikeouts and three walks.

Saturday's second game was a seven-inning affair. UNOH took a 3-0 lead before SHU struck back for its only two runs in the fifth.

Stricklin went 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Saints; both runs were scored on a single in the fifth. Williams had a 2-for-4 game.

Tayler Thelen was the losing pitcher. He surrendered five hits while compiling three strikeouts, three walks and one hit batter. Thelen did not allow an earned run.

Kyle Kurh pitched 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief for the Saints.

Ryan Petrangelo was the winning pitcher for Northwestern Ohio (30-8, 18-2). He gave up two runs on 10 hits while recording three strikeouts. John Schreiber pitched a scoreless seventh for the save.

Brandon Collins batted 2-for-2 for the Racers' offense. Alex Leach doubled.

The Saints and Racers will meet again on Sunday for another WHAC doubleheader.
