Baseball's Tough Day Results in Two Losses at CUAA

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team dropped a pair of contests to Concordia, 11-3 and 8-7, in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action on Saturday.

The day ended in walkoff fashion in the 8-7 nightcap. The Saints gained their first lead with a three-run seventh before Concordia pushed across three runs in its half of the seventh.

Eric Henderson batted 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI while Dennis Sharp Jr. added a 2-for-3 game with one RBI. Also for the Saints (11-16, 6-9), Nathaniel Kraus doubled and scored two runs. Freddy Jehle had a triple and Zach Dunlop contributed a double.

With SHU trailing 3-0, Henderson scored on a balk and Sharp ripped an RBI single as the Saints trimmed their deficit to 3-2.

Dunlop later had an RBI double during SHU's two-run sixth as the visits knotted the contest at 4-4. Concordia regained the lead in the sixth, going up 5-4, and set the stage for an eventful seventh.

Kraus tied the game with an RBI double. Henderson put the Saints ahead with a sacrifice fly and then Kraus scored later on the play via error as SHU took a 7-5 lead.

CUAA put only one ball in play during its half of the seventh -- a bases-loaded walkoff single by Jeremy Maas. Prior to that, the Cardinals' inning went as follows: hit-by-pitch, hit-by-pitch, walk, walk, walk.

Tayler Thelen was the losing pitcher. He gave up seven earned runs (eight total) and nine hits. He also recorded four strikeouts, two walks and three hit batsmen.

Cardinal reliever Jon Targus was the winning pitcher. Maas finished 3-for-4 with a triple, double and the game-winner.

Concordia led for most of the 11-3 opener, taking the lead for good in the fourth inning.

Dunlop was the Saints' leading offensive performer, batting 3-for-4 with an RBI. Travis Stricklin tripled and Austin Hauck doubled.

Hauck scored on a passed ball in the first and Sharp collected an RBI in the fourth to help the Saints into a 2-2 tie before CUAA took command.

Dunlop plated SHU's final run with an RBI single in the seventh.

Thomas McCarter was the losing pithcer. He gave up five runs on four hits.

Ryan Bosanac drove in four runs for the Cardinals. Josh Miller was the winning pitcher and Craig Bosanac earned the save.

The Saints will play their next contest on Tuesday when Holy Cross (Ind.) visits for a 4 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
