Baseball Drops Two in Home Opener Against Madonna

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team suffered a pair of losses to Madonna, 13-0 and 3-1, in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Wednesday at the SHU Baseball Diamond.

The visiting Crusaders (12-7, 2-0) gradually built their lead in the nine-inning 13-0 opener, finishing with a five-run ninth.

Austin Hauck had a 2-for-3 game for the Saints (4-8, 0-2).

SHU starting pitcher Kyle Kuhr worked five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while recording three strikeouts and two walks. He was tacked with the loss. Thomas McCarter threw one inning of scoreless relief.

Madonna was led by John Lauro and Levi Larmour (double), who both went 3-for-6 with three RBI. Taylor Grzelakowski added a 3-for-6 game with two runs and an RBI.

Winning pitcher Evan Piechota allowed four hits and went the distance. He had six strikeouts.

In the seven-inning 3-1 nightcap, Drew Milligan plated the Saints' only run with an RBI single.

Tyler Butlin was the losing pitcher for Siena Heights after throwing four innings. Kyle Burkholder tossed two scoreless innings in relief.

Ryan Lambrecht and Cole Rize had two hits apiece for Madonna (12-7, 2-0). Shane Dokey added a home run in support of winning pitcher Alex DeYonker. Bobby St. Pierre earned the save.

The Saints will return to action on Friday when Lourdes (Ohio) visits for a 4 p.m. WHAC doubleheader.
