Baseball Earns Split at Madonna

LIVONIA, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team split a doubleheader with Madonna on Wednesday in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play. The Saints won game one, 10-7, before dropping game two, 11-5.

In the opener, Austin Hauck batted 3-for-5 with one run and three RBI for SHU (9-10, 3-3), which enjoyed a seven-run second inning. Travis Mielcarek pitched four scoreless relief innings to earn the win.

Alec Duncan, Eric Henderson (double), Dennis Sharp Jr., and Joe Williams added two hits apiece for the Siena Heights offense. Williams drove in two runs while Dan Muller (double) scored twice.

Duncan and Muller were hit by pitches with the bases loaded as SHU took a 2-0 lead. Henderson and Mike Lollo followed with RBI singles, Williams drew a bases-loaded walk, and Hauck ripped a two-run single as the Saints went up, 7-0.

Madonna (15-12, 2-4) answered with two runs in the second and three in the third to trim its deficit to 7-5.

Siena Heights tacked on a pair of runs in its fourth; Logan Curtis hammered an RBI double and Hauck had an RBI groundout.

The Crusaders scored twice more in the sixth, closing the gap to 9-7 before SHU scored the game's final run on a Williams RBI single in the seventh.

Mielcarek allowed only one hit while finishing with one strikeout and one walk.

Donny Holland went 2-for-4 with three RBI for Madonna. John Lauro was 2-for-5.

In game two, the Crusaders broke a 5-all tie with six unanswered runs.

Once again, SHU took an early lead -- this time getting three runs in the first -- but unlike game one, the early lead would not hold.

Curtis had an RBI single in the Siena first; the Saints also scored on a wild pitch and an error.

Madonna then scored twice in its first and three times during the second.

SHU came back with two runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Hauck and an RBI double from Drew Byers, evening the score at 5-5.

The Crusaders took the lead for good with five runs in the fourth and one in the sixth.

Curtis (double), Byers (double) and Sharp had two hits apiece in game two. Lollo also doubled.

Laura (two doubles) batted 3-for-4 with two RBI for Madonna.

Justin McPherson was credited as the losing pitcher for SHU. Travis Schuba was the winner for Madonna.

Siena Heights will return to action this weekend with a four-game non-conference home series against Rochester.
