SHU Baseball Takes Two of Three at Berea

BEREA, Ky. -- The Siena Heights baseball team claimed two wins as it opened its season with a tripleheader against Berea (Ky.) on Saturday.

The Saints dropped game one, 16-7, before winning the next two, 7-6 and 7-6.

In the opener, Mike Lollo batted 3-for-4 with three RBI while Drew Byers and Eric Henderson had two hits and two RBI each. Byers also scored twice.

Also, Alec Duncan had two hits and Dan Muller doubled.

Trailing 5-0, the Saints struck for two runs in the third inning. Henderson had an RBI single. Lollo also drove in a run.

Lollo had an RBI single in SHU's one-run fifth. Then, in the sixth, Byers, Henderson and Lollo each smacked RBI singles. Byers added another run-scoring hit during the seventh.

Matt King was the losing pitcher. He worked three innings, allowing only four earned runs of the nine scored against him. He gave up nine hits and recorded three strikeouts and two walks.

In game two, Austin Hauck batted 3-for-4 with two RBI while Muller (triple), Henderson, Drew Milligan and Joe Williams had two hits apiece.

The Saints scored once in the second inning and five times during the third.

Hauck had an RBI single in the second.

During the third, Lollo drew a bases-loaded walk, Logan Curtis had a sacrifice fly, Muller ripped an RBI three-bagger, Hauck had an RBI single, and Henderson stole home on a double-steal.

Berea struck back with six runs in the fifth before Milligan delivered a two-out RBI single in the SHU seventh to put the Saints ahead for good.

Thomas McCarter started on the hill for Siena Heights. He worked 4 1/3 innings, allowing just five earned runs (six total) on six hits. He also recorded six strikeouts and one walk.

Ben Finn earned the win. He tossed 2 2/3 hitless innings with one strikeout.

In game three, Dennis Sharp Jr. (double) had two hits and two RBI. Nolan Herendeen also had two hits, Duncan drove in two runs and Williams doubled.

The Saints took a 2-1 lead in the second on RBI doubles by Williams and Sharp. They later snapped a 2-2 tie in the fourth, getting an RBI single from Sharp anda  two-run single from Duncan during the inning.

With the score tied at 6-all, the Saints took the lead for good on a sixth-inning groundout by Byers. Curtis had reached on a single, moved to second on a sac bunt, and then to third on an error before scoring on the batted ball by Byers.

Brent Vaccaro pitched the first 4 2/3 frames. He gave up six runs on eight hits while finishing with three strikeouts and three walks.

Tayler Thelen worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings, compiling two strikeouts and two walks, to earn the win.

The Saints will wrap up their four-game series with one game at Berea on Sunday.
