Three Saints Named NAIA Baseball Players to Watch

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper has named seniors Kyle Benschoter (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) andJake Sperry (Livonia, Mich./Westland John Glenn) and junior Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) to its list of Top NAIA Players to Watch for the 2013 season.

Benschoter was an All-Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Honorable Mention in 2012. The SHU second baseman batted .326 and finished with six doubles, one triple, one homer and 26 RBIs. Benschoter also scored 25 runs, stole two bases and compiled a 20-game hitting streak. One season highlight included a walk-off game-winning hit to clinch the WHAC Tournament championship.

Sperry is coming off a season in which he went 7-3 with a 3.36 earned-run average. He made 16 appearances, including 11 starts, and compiled 72 1/3 innings pitched. Sperry recorded one save while opponents batted .256 against him. He had a pair of key wins late in the season: a WHAC Tournament win over Madonna and an NAIA Tournament elimination game victory against Southern Poly (Ga.).

Kret had a 2.08 ERA and 0-2 record last season. He also set a single-season school record for saves, finishing with seven stops. He led the Saints with 22 appearances and, in 30 1/3 innings, he allowed batters to hit .232 against him. Kret was another solid late-season performer for SHU, earning WHAC Tournament saves over Indiana Tech and Madonna. He also saved one NAIA Tournament win against Southern Poly and closed out a second win over SPSU.

The Saints will open their season on Feb. 16-17 with four games in Kentucky. Opponents that weekend will include Campbellsville (Ky.), Missouri Baptist and Lindsey Wilson (Ky.).
