Salazar Helps SHU Baseball Claim Split Against Davenport

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball earned a 3-0 victory in game two after dropping an 8-3 decision in game one of a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader against Davenport on Wednesday at the Siena Heights Baseball Field.

B.J. Salazar (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Eastern) roped a two-run double and Mike Lollo (Allen Park, Mich./Cabrini) provided an RBI single during the Saints' three-run second inning and, from there, a set of predetermined SHU hurlers combined for a seven-inning shutout.

Starting pitcher Matt King (Rockville, Ind./Rockville) was credited with the win after going two shutout frames. Stephen Fisher (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River) and Ben Finn (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) provided two relief innings apiece before Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) pitched one inning for the save.

Kyle Benschoter (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) added two hits for the SHU offense.

Davenport's Danny Sullivan was the losing pitcher. He worked five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits while recording seven strikeouts and one walk.

In SHU's 8-4 loss, the home team was harmed early by a five-run Davenport first inning.

Corey Caldwell (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) and Drew Milligan (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) had two hits apiece with Caldwell connecting for a homer and two RBI. Milligan had an RBI triple.

The Panthers jumped ahead, scoring five runs with two outs in the opening frame. Michael Allen, Edward Grochowalski, Eric Cummings and Tyler Berger had RBI singles for the Panthers.

Caldwell had an RBI single in the SHU first, trimming the hosts' deficit to 5-1, but DU came back with two more runs in its second -- one on an RBI groundout by Jothan Woo and another on an Allen single.

Milligan helped the Saints chip away in the fourth, driving a triple to the gap in right-center field. He then scored on a balk.

DU got a run back in the sixth before Caldwell's blast over the wall in right provided the game's final run.

Allen and Cam Cooper had two hits apiece for the Panthers. Cooper (double) also scored three runs.

Thomas McCarter (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer East) was the losing pitcher. Tyler Butlin (Saint Clair, Mich./Saint Clair) and Travis Mielcarek (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) tossed two shutout innings in relief while Riley Smith (Farmington, Mich./Farmington) came through with one scoreless frame.

Michael Clutterbuck was the winner for DU, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing four runs on eight hits. Ryan Butzer added 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief to earn the save.

The Saints (6-12, 3-5) will return to action on Thursday with a 4 p.m. game against cross-town rival Adrian.
