SHU Baseball, UNOH Split Doubleheader

LIMA, Ohio -- The Siena Heights baseball team split a pair of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference games against Northwestern Ohio on Saturday, dropping the first game, 10-6, before winning the second, 10-9.

In the 10-9 win, the Saints had two five-run innings and had to weather a nine-run UNOH inning to hold onto victory.

Daniel Abbott (Plymouth, Mich./Lutheran Westland) batted 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI while Mike Lollo (Allen, Park, Mich./Cabrini) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the SHU offense.

Kyle Benschoter (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) added a 2-for-4 game with a double, two runs and two RBI. Eric Henderson (Howell, Mich./Howell) also scored twice for the Saints (7-14, 4-6).

SHU tacked on five in both the third and fourth frames.

During the third, Abbott had a two runs single and eventually scored on an error. Corey Caldwell (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) added an RBI single and Robbie Schwartz (Adrian, Mich./Adrian) drove in a run.

Then, in the fourth, Benschoter drove in two runs with his two-bagger while Henderson, Abbott and B.J. Salazar (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Eastern) delivered RBI singles.

Down 10-0, the Racers (11-16, 4-7) nearly came all the way back. During the UNOH fourth, Vince Anello had an RBI double and sacrifice fly, Ben Schubert smashed a two-run triple and Alex Leach delivered a two-run single.

Also for UNOH, Jose Gonzalez had an RBI double, Geoff Bowers hammered an RBI triple and Chris Bell drove a sacrifice fly.

Jake Sperry (Livonia, Mich./Westland John Glenn) started on the hill for SHU and worked into the fourth inning. He was one of three Siena Heights pitchers used in the fourth; Stephen Fisher (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River) eventually put out the fire and ended up going 2 2/3 scoreless innings to claim the win.

Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for the save.

For the UNOH offense, Gonzalez (double) and Cesar Loiz had three hits apiece.

Pichi Torres was the losing pitcher, lasting two innings and allowing two runs on two hits.

In SHU's 10-6 loss, Lollo went 3-for-5 with a triple, two runs and one RBI. Abbott added a 2-for-4 game with two RBI while Caldwell contributed a 2-for-3 effort with a double, homer, two runs and one RBI.

The Saints had an early 3-0 lead, but fell victims to a six-run fourth inning by the Racers.

Marcus Stewart (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) had an RBI single in the second, Abbott smacked an RBI single in the third and Caldwell homered in the fourth, pushing the visitors' lead to three.

Then, UNOH came back with its big inning, which was highlighted by a Ben Smith grand slam. Bell added an RBI single and Bowers had an RBI groundout as the Racer lead reaced 6-3.

Abbott helped the Saints come back with an RBI single in the fifth and Benschoter later scored on an error as SHU cut its deficit to 6-5.

Loiz drew a bases-loaded walk in the UNOH fifth. Another run came on a Leach sac fly and then another crossed the plate on an error as the hosts widened their lead to 9-5.

In the SHU sixth, Lollo had an RBI single for the Saints' final run. Cory Cook came back with an RBI single in the Racers' sixth for the contest's final run.

SHU's Matt King (Rockville, Ind./Rockville) struggled with command and suffered the loss. He pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on four hits. King recorded four strikeouts, two walks and three hit batsmen.

(Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer East) pitched three scoreless frames in relief for the Saints.

For UNOH, Bell batted 3-for-4 with a run and RBI while Anello and Schubert smashed triples. Ryan Lozada scored twice as the Racers had five team stolen bases.

Brodie Mitchell started on the hill for UNOH, going 4 1/3 frames and fiving up five runs on seven hits. He compiled four strikeouts, one walks and one hit batsman.

Relief pitcher Tyler Eaton earned the win UNOH and Junior Santos picked up the save.

The Saints and Racers will meet again for another WHAC doubleheader on Sunday.
