SHU Baseball Splits Home Opener with Concordia

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team split a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader with Concordia on Thursday at the Siena Heights Baseball Diamond. The Saints won game one, 3-2, and then dropped game two, 11-5.

The Saints (4-10, 1-3) came from behind for their win after allowing two runs in the Concordia first inning.

With SHU trailing 2-0 in the fifth, Dennis Sharp (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) smacked an RBI single to plate Austin Hauck (Saline, Mich./Saline). Hauck had reached base with a single before moving up on a sacrifice bunt by Drew Milligan (Hudson, Mich./Hudson).

Later in the frame, Corey Caldwell (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) smashed a two-run double to bring in Sharp and Eric Henderson (Howell, Mich./Howell), who like Sharp, reached with a single.

The Cardinals (4-15, 3-5) scored their runs on RBI singles by Jeremy Robinson and Ryan Bosanac.

Hauck also had a double in support of winning pitcher Thomas McCarter (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer East), who worked five innings, surrendered seven hits and recorded one strikeout and one walk.

Tyler Butlin (Saint Clair, Mich./Saint Clair) tossed three shutout innings of relief before Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) worked the ninth for the save. Neither reliever allowed a hit.

Tyler Steele was the losing pitcher for Concordia. He gave up three runs on six hits while finishing with three strikeouts and three walks.

In game two, the Cardinals chased SHU starting pitcher Matt King (Rockville, Ind./Rockville) during the second inning and led the entire way.

Henderson led the Siena Heights offense with two hits, including a double. Mike Lollo (Allen Park, Mich./Cabrini) and Travis Podolak (Bowling Green, Ohio/Otsego) also doubled.

Concordia went up 1-0 on an RBI triple by Nate McHugh, who batted 4-for-4. Chase Freeman also had an RBI during the frame, helping the Cards to an early 2-0 advantage.

McHugh smacked an RBI single in the second, pushing the CUAA lead to 3-0, before the Saints came back with a run in the second on an RBI by Bill Laranga (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee).

In the Concordia third, Ryan Bosanac doubled and later scored on a balk. Jeremy Maas later squeezed in a run.

The Saints came back with two runs in their third -- one on a sac fly by Robbie Schwartz (Adrian, Mich./Adrian) and another on an error -- but from there, Concordia scored five consecutive runs before the Saints pushed across two scores in the seventh when Podolak and Henderson delivered run-scoring two-baggers.

The Saints will return to action with doubleheaders on Saturday and Monday against WHAC opponent Lourdes (Ohio).
