SHU Baseball Posts Back-to-Back Shutouts Against Rochester

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Eleven different pitchers worked on Sunday, helping the Siena Heights baseball team to a pair of shutout wins -- 8-0 and 5-0 -- in non-conference action at the Siena Heights Baseball Diamond. Both contests went seven innings.

In game one, four Saint hurlers combined for a one-hit shutout. As a group, they had four strikeouts and two walks.

Stephen Fisher (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River), Tyler Butlin (Saint Clair, Mich./Saint Clair) and Thomas McCarter (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer East) tossed two shutout frames apiece before Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) threw one scoreless frame. Butlin was credited with the win.

Offensively, the Saints were led by Daniel Abbott (Plymouth, Mich./Lutheran Westland), Corey Caldwell (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) and Mike Lollo (Allen Park, Mich./Cabrini), who had two hits each.

Abbott went 2-for-2 with a triple, run and RBI. Lollo added two runs and Caldwell drove in one.

Also, Eric Henderson (Howell, Mich./Howell) and Kyle Benschoter (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) scored two runs each.

SHU opened the scoring with two runs in the third -- one on an Abbott triple and another on a Caldwell single. Both scores came with two outs.

In the fifth, Benschoter had an RBI single and Nolan Herendeen (Grass Lake, Mich./Grass Lake) skied a sacrifice fly.

Then in the sixth, the Saints pushed across four runs with two outs. The Rochester defense helped a bit, firing a wild pitch to plate Henderson and dropping a Caldwell fly ball to allow three runs in.

In game two, pitching duties were split between seven SHU throwers who tossed one inning each and combined for a four-hit shutout with four strikeouts and two walks.

Starting pitcher Brent Vaccaro (Saline, Mich./Saline) was credited with the win. Other pitchers were Zach Smith (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted), Ben Finn (Dexter, Mich./Dexter), Travis Mielcarek (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic), Jake Sperry (Livonia, Mich./Westland John Glenn), Justin McPherson (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford) and Riley Smith (Farmington, Mich./Farmington).

Lollo led the offense, going 3-for-3 with a double, one run and two RBI. Henderson doubled and scored two runs.

The Saints jumped ahead early and never looked back as Abbott hit a sac fly in the SHU first before he and Caldwell provided RBI singles in the third.

Lollo drove in the Saints' final two runs with a double in the fourth.

Siena Heights (10-23) will play next on Tuesday when Albion visits for a 4 p.m. start. Prior to the game, the Saints will honor 2012 NAIA Rawlings Golf Glove winners Corey Alexander (pitcher) and Cory Lehman (shortstop).
