SHU Baseball Suffers Pair of Tough Losses to UNOH

LIMA, Ohio -- The Siena Heights baseball team struggled on Sunday, dropping a pair of decisions on Sunday to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opponent Northwestern Ohio.

The Saints fell in game one, 12-6, before suffering an 8-7 walkoff loss in the nightcap.

In game one, Daniel Abbott (Plymouth, Mich./Lutheran Westland) batted 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Eric Henderson (Howell, Mich./Howell), Kyle Benschoter (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) and Nolan Herendeen (Grass Lake, Mich./Grass Lake) added two hits apiece for the Saints (7-17, 4-8).

SHU found itself in an early 9-1 deficit and never recorded in the opener.

Henderson provided an RBI single in the Saints' second inning, but the Racers picked up nine runs through the first four frames to build their eight-run cushion.

The visitors closed their gap in the fifth, getting RBI singles from Abbott and Benschoter. Marcus Stewart (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) drove a sacrifice fly for SHU's fourth run.

Northwestern Ohio pushed across three more runs the rest of the way while Abbott pounded a two-run round-tripper.

Chris Bell led the Racers offensively, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run and an RBI. Ben Schubert had a home run while Cory Cook doubled and drove in three runs.

Johnny Fageaux earned the win, working three innings in relief. Tyler Eaton added two scoreless innings for the save.

For the Saints, Travis Mielcarek (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) pitched 3 1/3 innings and took the loss. Ben Finn (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) tossed 1 1/3 shutout frames in relief.

Siena Heights had led the second game, 7-1, but UNOH chipped away with seven consecutive runs, including two in the game-ending seventh.

Corey Caldwell (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) hit a two-run double and Herendeen drove an RBI double during the SHU first. The Saints picked up another run while facing three pitchers in the inning.

Vince Anello came through with an RBI single in UNOH's half of the inning before the Saints pushed the gap to 7-1 with RBI doubles by Henderson, Benschoter and Caldwell in the second.

Northwestern Ohio then came back with one run in the second and two in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Ben Smith tied the game for UNOH with a sac fly. Alex Leach ended the game with an RBI single.

Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) took the loss for Siena. Brent Vaccaro (Saline, Mich./Saline) started on the mound, compiling 4 1/3 innings pitched into four strikeouts and one walk. Vaccaro was credited with only one earned run.

Henderson led the offensive attack, going 4-for-5 with one run and one RBI. Caldwell, Herendeen and Drew Milligan (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) had two hits apiece and Benschoter scored two runs.

Smith finished with four RBI for the Racers. Bell was the winning pitcher.

Siena Heights will return to action on Monday with a 6 p.m. non-conference game at Lourdes (Ohio).
