Saints' Baseball Drops Pair to Indiana Tech

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team dropped a pair of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contests to Indiana Tech at O'Laughlin Stadium on Sunday, 19-7 and 2-1.

The visiting Warriors (25-11, 15-5) broke a 7-all tie in the opener and scored 12 unanswered runs.

Kyle Benschoter (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) batted 3-for-5 with a double and one run scored while Daniel Abbott (Plymouth, Mich./Lutherand Westland), Corey Caldwell (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) and Nolan Herendeen (Grass Lake, Mich./Grass Lake) each batted 2-for-5.

Caldwell and Herendeen also had doubles.

The Saints scored their runs in the second, third and fifth innings while allowing Warrior runs in every inning but one.

B.J. Salazar (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Eastern) hit an RBI single and Eric Henderson (Howell, Mich./Howell) drove in another run as the Saints pulled even at 2-2 during the second frame.

Trailing 3-2 in the third, SHU came back with three runs including one on an Abbott single, one on a Herendeen groundout and one when Kyle Johnson (Adrian, Mich./Adrian) reached base via error.

Indiana Tech retook the lead in the fourth and then pushed the gap to 7-5 before the Saints tied the contest for the final time on RBI singles by Henderson and Drew Milligan (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) in the fifth.

From there, Indiana Tech scored twice in the sixth, once in the seventh, four times in the eighth and five times in the ninth.

Bryan Brudi went 3-for-4 with five runs and four RBI and Justin Kalusa was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI for Indiana Tech.

Eric Wald added a 3-for-5 game with a run and four RBI, Eric Wald was 2-for-3 with a run and four RBI, and Ray Calloway (triple) batted 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.

Bryan Wachtle worked 4 2/3 relief innings for the Indiana Tech pitching staff to earn the win.

SHU's Tyler Butlin (Saint Clair, Mich./Saint Clair) suffered the loss.

In game two, Siena Heights took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and that score held until the Warriors plated solo runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

During the second, Abbott doubled and then his pinch-runner, Drew Byers (Osseo, Mich./Hillsdale), scored on a groundout by Herendeen.

Indiana Tech plated its runs on a double by Kalusa in the sixth and then an Ignatius Mackenzie single in the seventh.

Stephen Fisher was the tough-luck losing pitcher for Siena Heights. He lasted 6 1/3 innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits while recording five strikeouts and one walk.

Milligan led the SHU offense with two hits, including a double.

For the Warriors, Wald went 2-for-3, including a double. Zach Sailors was the winning pitcher, allowing one run on seven hits while compiling two strikeouts and one walk.

The Saints (8-20, 5-11) will return to action on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. non-conference game at Albion.
