SHU Baseball Season Ends With Two Defeats at Aquinas

WYOMING, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team wrapped up its season with a pair of losses to Aquinas, 4-2 and 8-7, in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference competition on Sunday.

Siena Heights (13-28, 6-16) led the first contest, 2-0, before Aquinas ran off four unanswered runs.

Mike Lollo (Allen Park, Mich./Cabrini) batted 3-for-5 while Kyle Benschoter (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) went 2-for-5.

Corey Caldwell (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) produced both runs for SHU with a double in the fourth inning.

From there, Aquinas scored one run in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Jake Sperry (Livonia, Mich./Westland John Glenn) was the losing pitcher for Siena. He worked all eight innings, finishing with two strikeouts and one walk.

Josh Drake had a two-run home run for Aquinas in support of winning pitcher Kevin Schafer.

In the 8-7 defeat, Benschoter batted 4-for-5 and Caldwell went 3-for-3 with a homer, double and four RBI.

Once again, SHU took an early lead -- going ahead 4-0 in the first -- but Aquinas came back with six scored during the third.

The visitors tacked on single runs during the fourth, fifth and sixth frames, before Aquinas scored solo scores in the sixth and seventh -- the final run coming on a pinch-hit, walk-off RBI single by Seth Holton.

Daniel Abbott (Plymouth, Mich./Lutheran Westland) and Drew Byers (Osseo, Mich./Hillsdale) drew bases-loaded walks and Caldwell crunched a two-run double in SHU's four-run first.

Aquinas' six-run third was highlighted by Greg Baranyai's two-run double.

Siena Heights trimmed its deficit to 6-5 in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk by Caldwell and then tied the contest in the fifth on an RBI single by Benschoter.

Caldwell gave SHU its final lead with his round-tripper during the sixth.

Aquinas tied the contest back up at 7-all on a double by Nick Kissane, setting the stage for Holton's heroics.

Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) suffered the loss in relief.

Reliever Tyler Cole was the winning pitcher for Aquinas.
