Saints' Baseball Knocks off #19 USF, Thomas

FROSTPROOF, Fla. -- The Siena Heights baseball team snapped a six-game losing streak with a pair of wins in the Warner Invitational on Friday. The Saints defeated 19th-ranked Saint Thomas (Ill.), 3-1, and then knocked off Thomas (Ga.), 5-2.

In the opener, winning pitcher Brent Vaccaro (Saline, Mich./Saline) worked the first five innings, allowing one run on five hits while recording three strikeouts. Reliever Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) worked two hitless frames for the save -- his eighth as a Saint, which is a new SHU career record.

At the plate, Corey Caldwell (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln Consolidated), Eric Henderson (Howell, Mich./Howell), Mike Lollo (Allen Park, Mich./Cabrini) and Dennis Sharp (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) batted 2-for-3 each. Caldwell and Sharp had doubles.

SHU scored once in the first and twice in the fourth. Henderson and Lollo singled before Caldwell delivered an RBI double. Then, in the fourth, Robbie Schwartz (Adrian, Mich./Adrian) and Drew Milligan (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) walked and singled, respectively, before Sharp smacked an RBI single; another run scored on a Saint Francis error.

Against Thomas, Lollo led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a double.

Matt King (Rockville, Ind./Rockville) earned the win on the hill, working 3 2/3 innings. He gave up two runs on five hits while compiling four strikeouts and one walk.

Stephen Fisher (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River) pitched the final 3 1/3 frames of scoreless ball for the save.

SHU scored two runs in the first as Henderson reached on an error and Lollo singled to set up an RBI single by Kyle Benschoter (Hudson, Mich./Hudson) and sacrifice fly by Dan Abbott (Plymouth, Mich./Lutheran Westland).

During a three-run second, Kyle Johnson (Adrian, Mich./Adrian) and Drew Byers (Osseo, Mich./Hillsdale) drew walks and B.J. Salazar (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Eastern) delivered a sacrifice bunt. After that, Henderson had an RBI single and Lollo smashed an RBI double; the Saints added another run on an error.

The Saints (3-6) will return to action with a 12:30 p.m. contest against host Warner on Saturday.
