SHU Baseball Sweeps Twinbill with Holy Cross

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Holy Cross (Ind.), 6-3 and 5-2, on Thursday at the Siena Heights Baseball Diamond.

In game one, winning pitcher Matt King (Rockville, Ind./Rockville) fired a complete game and the Siena Heights offense had 14 hits.

Mike Lollo (Allen Park, Mich./Cabrini), Kyle Benschoter (Hudson, Mich./Hudson), Daniel Abbott (Plymouth, Mich./Lutheran Westland), Corey Caldwell (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln), Nolan Herendeen (Grass Lake, Mich./Grass Lake) and Marcus Stewart (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) had two-hit games for the Saints.

Lollo doubled twice while Benschoter, Abbott and Caldwell had one double apiece.

Siena Heights scored three runs in the first inning and three in the third.

In the first, Abbott smashed a two-run double and Caldwell ripped an RBI double.

During the third, Benschoter had an RBI double, Caldwell hit a sacrifice fly, and Dennis Sharp (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) smacked an RBI single.

King allowed three runs on seven hits while claiming the win. He struck out four batters.

In game two, the Saints used a five-run third inning to take the lead for good. Lollo and Benschoter ripped two-run singles while Sharp ripped an RBI double.

Benschoter finished with two hits in support of winning pitcher Brent Vaccaro (Saline, Mich./Saline).

Vaccaro worked six innings and was charged with one earned run on six hits. He pitched the six innings and surrendered two runs (one earned) on six hits before Jake Kret (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the save.

The Saints (12-24) will return to action on Friday with a 7 p.m. contest at Adrian.
