SHU Baseball Opens Season With Split

BABSON PARK, Fla. – Corey Caldwell (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln Consolidated) delivered a pinch-hit, walk-off RBI single and Jake Sperry (Livonia, Mich./Westland John Glenn) threw a one-hitter as the Siena Heights baseball team opened its season with a 2-1 win over Lourdes (Ohio) before dropping a 4-3 decision to host Webber International (Fla.) on Sunday.

Against Lourdes, Caldwell's game-ending hit came with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Nolan Herendeen (Grass Lake, Mich./Grass Lake) led off the frame, getting hit by a pitch, and then Robbie Schwartz (Adrian, Mich./Adrian) walked, setting the stage for Caldwell who drove in pinch-runner Drew Milligan (Hudson, Mich./Hudson).

Sperry had a no-hitter heading into the seventh inning despite early control issues. After giving up a first-inning run to Lourdes, the senior settled in and was unhittable, striking out two and walking six while giving up a single to start the seventh.

Kyle Johnson (Adrian, Mich./Adrian) got things going for the Saints in the third inning with a two-out base hit to right field. Mike Lollo (Allen Park, Mich./Cabrini) followed suit with an RBI double to left field, scoring Johnson to tie the game at one apiece.

SHU led the nightcap, but could not hold off the host Warriors.

In the first, Lollo started the scoring. He singled to left field, stole second, and scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Dan Abbott (Plymouth, Mich./Lutheran Westland) to right field to make it 1-0.

In the second inning, the Saints continued seeing the ball well, getting two more hits and one run when Milligan reached base on an infield single, stole second and scored on a Lollo RBI single to left-center field.

Webber responded in the third inning, scoring a unearned run off Travis Mielcarek (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic), making the score 3-1.

The Saints scored a third run in the third inning thanks to a leadoff hit by Abbott through the left side of the infield. Abbott later scored on an RBI single from Milligan.

The Warriors tied the game at three with the rare bases loaded suicide squeeze and won the game in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Milligan went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored on the day. Lollo finished the day 4-for-7 with two RBI and two runs scored. Mielcarek pitched three and a third inning with four strikeouts and two walks giving up two earned runs.

The Saints face Saint Francis (Ill.) at 9 a.m. and then Bethel (Ind.) in 3 p.m.
