Women's Basketball Dominant in First Matchup with Cleary

LANSING, Mich. -- Jillian Gelso scored 15 points to lead the Siena Heights women's basketball team in its first-ever matchup with Cleary -- an 89-39 WHAC victory -- on Saturday.

Gelso connected on 5 of 11 three-pointers -- all in the first half -- as the Saints built a 50-17 halftime lead. E'Anna Won added 14 points while Kayla Hinton finished with eight points, six assists and six rebounds.

Also for SHU (7-2, 4-1), which won its seventh straight, Julia Gilbert had six rebounds and Madison Vice dished six assists.

Gelso immediately made her mark on the contest, spotting the Saints a 6-0 advantage with back-to-back treys, as SHU took a 20-8 lead through one quarter.

Siena Heights outscored Cleary, 30-9, in the second period; Gelso hit her next three 3s in that period.

"Our defense set the tone from beginning to end," Saints coach Sue Syljebeck said. "Every player that got in was focused on our goa. We have been taking a lot of pride in our defense. Tonight, it was good to see our offense step up another level, as well."

The Saints shot 34 of 63 from the field (54.0 percent), including 10 of 25 from three-point land (40.0) while holding Cleary to 14 of 54 (25.9) and 4 of 22 (18.2), respectively. SHU won the rebound battle, 42-26, and committed only eight turnovers.

SHU will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 9, with a 1 p.m. WHAC contest at Madonna.
