Concordia Takes Pair from Saints

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team dropped a doubleheader against WHAC opponent Concordia (MI) on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Concordia 8, Siena Heights 2

Joe Tany pitched a complete game in the first contest for the Cardinals earning a win and notching six strikeouts. Zach Bloom pitched six innings for the Saints, earning two strikeouts. Concordia struck first in the 2nd inning when Chris Lowe used a sacrifice fly to drive in Grant Steinborn for a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals maintained that lead until the 5th inning when SHU tied the game 1-1 as Cameron Hammer used a sacrifice fly to bring in Matthew Love for an RBI. 

Concordia pulled away with three runs in the 6th inning.  Jordan Sherman opened the scoring with an RBI single that drove in Grant Steinborn.  RJ Bortle then later hit a single for an RBI that scored Sherman. Adam Purdy closed out scoring with another RBI single that brought Vann Acker home. The Saints got a run back in the bottom of the 6th inning when Chris Winkelman lined out to centerfield that scored Cole VanWasshenova for an RBI but CUAA still led 4-2.

Concordia extended their lead with 2 more runs in the 7th inning on a 2-RBI double by Calvin Syrjala scoring Grant Steinborn and Victor Diaz. The Cardinals added a run in the 8th inning when Victor Diaz had an RBI single to score Dylan Stienke. RJ Bortle rounded out the scoring in the game with an RBI triple in the 9th inning that drove in Vann Acker.

Game 2: Concordia 14, Siena Heights 5

Brendan Lyons began game two on the mound for the Cardinals, recording four strikeouts in four innings. Kenny Layman started on the mound for the Saints, notching three strikeouts.

Concordia broke the shutout with three runs in the inning. Victor Diaz reached home on a wild pitch for the first run of the game. Calvin Syrjala had an RBI triple to score Grant Steinborn and then scored on an error by the centerfielder. SHU earned their first run of the game when Deven Hill reached first on an error by the shortstop and Cal Olmstead pinch ran for him then eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Victor Diaz reached home in the 5th-inning to extend Concordia's lead. CUAA plated three more runs in the 6th inning, starting with a 2-RBI triple from Chris Lowe that scored Adam Purdy and Jarrett Batanian. Grant Steinborn added an RBI single that drove in Victor Diaz for a 7-1 lead.

Siena tightened the game with four runs in the 7th inning to pull within two runs. Haydn Smith singled through the right side for an RBI to score Mike GarciaCameron Hammer had an RBI singling up the middle to bring in Parker MabeAdam Wilding reached on a fielder's choice for an RBI to score Cal Olmstead. Haydn Smith closed out scoring as he reached home on a wild pitch.

Concordia responded with 6 runs in the 8th inning and one run in the 9th inning as the Saints had no runs the remainder of the game that finished off the sweep.
