Two-Goal Second Half Guides Women's Soccer to Victory over Concordia

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A strong second half lifted the Siena Heights women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opponent Concordia, on Friday afternoon. Elizabeth Furgason (Freshman, Haslett, Mich.) had the game-winning goal.

Records: Siena Heights (11-4-1, 7-2 WHAC), Concordia (7-8, 4-5 WHAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Saints came out on their toes as Kathryn Gordon (Senior, Canton, Mich.) opened the scoring 36 seconds into the game off a rebound after Concordia's goalkeeper Anna Roman (L, 6-8) attempted to clear the ball. The Cardinals dominated in possession the rest of the half as they put up 12 shots compared to SHU's seven. Concordia scored the equilizer as Megan Starkey netted the ball off an assist from Kendra Lewis in the 16th minute. The Cardinals kept the momentum going as Samantha Golchuk found the back of the net with Megan Schulz picking up the helper in the 25th minute. The Saints were unable to capitilize on the rest of their chances and Concordia's 2-1 lead held through half time.

The Cardinals barely edged SHU putting up 12 shots compared to the Saints' 11 in the second half. SHU earned a penalty kick in the 59th minute after a foul on a Concorida defender taken by Julia Stancato (Senior, South Lyon, Mich.) and was good to tie the game 2-2. The half remained at a standstill for nearly 17 minutes until Furgason scored off a feed from Stancato in the 75th minute to earn the Saints the victory.

TOP SAINTS

• Gordon earned her second goal, Furgason earned her third goal, and Stancato earned her fifth goal on the season.

• Stancato also earned an assist.

Sophia Lentz (W, 7-4) made ten saves in her 60 minutes of play and Kara Bishop (Junior, Allegan, Mich.) made five saves in her 30 minutes of play.

THE OPPOSITION

• Starkey and Golchuk each had a goal.

• Lewis and Schulz each recorded an assist.

• Anna Roman (L, 6-8) made seven saves between the pipes for the Cardinals.

WHAC STANDINGS

SHU remains in 4th place in the league standings and Concordia remains in 8th place. The next two games are determinates of which top eight teams will make the WHAC tournament and where it will be held as the top four seeds will host.

The Saints will face off against Aquinas in a home WHAC matchup on Wednesday, October 30th. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7:00 p.m., EDT.
