Women's Soccer Open WHAC Play with Loss to Cornerstone

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. -- The Siena Heights women's soccer team fell to Cornerstone in their first WHAC contest of the season with a final score of 3-1. Julia Stancato (Senior, South Lyon, Mich.) scored the Saints' lone goal of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Eagles were ready to open WHAC play as they came out on their toes and scored their three goals of the game in the first half.  Grace Wiersema scored off a deflected shot from a cornerkick and was assisted by Erica Mick and Anna Morgan in the 13:08 minute. Alexys Riksen scored off a pass in front of the box from Phoebe LaCroix and slotted past Saints goalkeeper Sophia Lentz (L, 2-3) in the 22:17 minute of play. Four minutes later Riksen scored her second goal of the game off a pass through the defense from LaCroix in the 26:23 minute. Siena would be unable to capatalize on their chances in the first half and Cornerstone would head to the locker room with a 3-0 lead. The Eagles edged the Saints six shots to three and three cornerkicks to zero in the first half.

The second half would see no action for nearly 30 minutes until Siena was able to put themselves on the board. Stancato scored from a penalty kick shot in the 74:34 minute pushing the score to 3-1. The rest of the half would remain deadlock as neither team were able to find the net and the Eagles would walk away with their first WHAC contest win of the season. The Saints edged Cornerstone six shot to three and two cornerkicks to zero in the second half.

TOP SAINTS

• Stancato had a goal.

Macy Llewellyn (Junior, La Porte, Ind.) had two shots on goal.

• Lentz (Senior, Kalamazoo, Mich.) had two saves between the Pipes for the Saints.

THE OPPOSING

• Riksen had two goals.

• Wiersema had a goal.

• Mick and Morgan each recorded an assist. LaCroix had two assists.

The Saints continue WHAC play on the road against Clearly on Saturday, September 28th. The game is scheduled to kick off at 1:00 p.m. EDT.
