Women's Hoops to Take on Madonna

THIS WEEK IN SHU WOMEN'S HOOPS

SIENA HEIGHTS (7-2, 4-1)

vs. MADONNA (4-3, 2-2), Saturday, 1 p.m.

 

HEAD COACH: Sue Syljebeck is in her 20th season as the head coach of the Saints women's basketball program. She is the program's winningest coach with a career record of 366-230. Syljebeck currently ranks 22nd on the NAIA Women's basketball active coach wins list. She will be assisted this year by Deb Ray, Sara Chrenko, Niesha Lowe, Mo Rammuny, Dan Brooks and Tee Watters.
 
SHU RUNS STREAK TO SEVEN: The Saints stretched their win streak to seven with wins over Northwestern Ohio and Cleary last week.

SHU cruised to a 61-29 home victory against the Racers. Madison Vice was the Saints' leading scorer with 12 points while Kayla Hinton had a strong all-around game with 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Jakarri Alven scored 10 points. Olivia DeLong grabbed eight rebounds while Eva Alcock, Brooke Rebman and E'Anna Won hauled down seven boards each.

SHU defeated Cleary, 89-39, in a first-ever matchup between the programs. Jillian Gelso scored 15 points to lead the Saints.

Gelso connected on 5 of 11 three-pointers -- all in the first half -- as the Saints built a 50-17 halftime lead. Won added 14 points while Hinton finished with eight points, six assists and six rebounds.

Julia Gilbert had six rebounds and Vice dished six assists.

Hinton: Team-high 12.0 ppg, team-high 7.1 rpg, team-high 3.3 apg, 1.0 spg

Won: 8.9 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 3.2 apg, team-high 2.1 spg

Gelso: 8.4 ppg

Vice: 8.4 ppg, 2.6 apg, .446 field-goal percentage, team-high .444 three-point percentage

Alven: 7.2 ppg, team-high .622 field-goal percentage

DeLong: 6.2 rpg, 1.0 spg, team-high 2.0 bpg

 

LAST YEAR'S MEETINGS

Siena Heights swept the 2022-23 season-series with a pair of victories, stretching its win streak to 13 over Madonna. The Saints defeated the Crusaders, 79-27, in Adrian and 78-40 in Livonia. Madonna's last win against SHU was Feb. 25, 2016.
