Saints Never Trail in Second-Straight WHAC Win

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's basketball defense gave up its lowest total points of the season in a 58-30 win over UNOH inside the SHU Fieldhouse on Saturday evening. The Saints (11-2, 5-2 WHAC) scored 20 points in the first and fourth quarters to run away with the win.

Peyton Banks was the leading scorer with 19 points. Banks also led the team with seven rebounds in the victory. Anaya Powell and Sha'kyia Parker both scored nine points. Powell pulled down four boards and also recorded three assists ninth game.

SHU scored the game's first eight points and never trailed from there. A 10-0 run ended the first quarter for the Saints as their defense held the Racers to only seven points in the opening 20-7 frame.

A layup by UNOH in the middle of a 7-0 run cut the deficit to single digits, 20-14, with 7:19 left in the first half. Then, Eva Alcock hit a jumper that started a 6-0 run for the Saints and drove the lead back to 12, 26-14 with 3:43 left on the clock. Back-to-back layups by UNOH cut the lead to eight, but three points to end the half by Siena Heights put the margin at 29-18 for halftime.

The third quarter was a low-scoring affair as the teams combined for just 15 points in the period. Banks made two threes and a layup to score eight of SHU's nine points for the third as the home team maintained a commanding 38-24 lead going into the final quarter.

Banks finished her night with two free throws and a layup in the opening two minutes of the final period. Powell hit two shots from deep to push the Saint lead to 48-27 with just over five minutes left to play. Siena pulled their starters at the 5:11 mark to wrap up the win. Olivia DeLong scored four points, and Jillian Gelso made two three-point jumpers in mop-up duty for SHU.

The Saints travel to Hawaii next week for two games in the Hoop and Surf tournament in Honolulu on Friday, December 17, and Sunday, December 19. The first contest of the trip will be against Doane at 9:00 a.m. HST.
