#16 SHU Women Open Season With Win Over Spring Arbor

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Morgan Warfield scored 17 points, leading a trio of Siena Heights scorers in double-figures, as the 16th-ranked Saints' women's basketball team opened its season with an 80-53 victory over non-conference opponent Spring Arbor on Tuesday at the SHU Fieldhouse.

Warfield had five 3-pointers to move into second all-time on the SHU career list for 3-balls while teammate Grace Howrigon closed in on the Saints' career assists mark with eight helpers against SAU.

Sierra Calhoun added 14 points and Jen Jasinski put in 11 for SHU. Alexxis Knannlein and Lauren Wirth added eight and six rebounds, respectively. Knannlein also had three blocks.

The Saints (1-0) charged out to an 11-2 lead, getting six points from Calhoun and five from Warfield, and never looked back. SHU closed the opening half on a 24-3 run, getting nine points from Warfield on three 3s, and took a 46-18 halftime lead.

SHU's lead twice ballooned to 41 points in the second half before the visiting Cougars (3-1) ended the game on an 18-4 stretch.

As a team, Siena Heights shot 60.4 percent from the field (29 of 48) while SAU was 28.4 percent (19 of 67).

Warfield now has 171 career 3-pointers, moving her past Shalala Hubbard (170). She trails only Jessica Spiegel (213).

Howrigon is just four off the career mark for assists. She has 379 in her SHU career -- just four behind Michele Lourim (383).

For Spring Arbor, Carlie Newman had 15 points, Kylie Townsley scored 11, and Jessica Garrison had 10.

The Saints will return to action on Thursday with a WHAC opening game against Cornerstone at 6 p.m.
