Softball Splits a Pair In Florida

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- The Siena Heights softball team split a pair of games at the SpaceCoast Games on Tuesday, defeating Bethel (Ind.), 10-5, and then falling to New College of Florida, 2-1.

The Saints have an off-day Wednesday before resuming play Thursday with games against Calumet and Fisher, starting at 10 a.m.

Both Lee Clinton and Lauren Dioszegi had two-hit, three-RBI games as the Saints overcame an early 2-0 deficit with 10 consecutive runs.

Clinton's line included an inside-the-park home run and two stolen bases. Dioszegi had two doubles.

Liberti Fair added two doubles and an RBI. Ellie Thelen also had two hits. Faith Breinager tripled.

Winning pitcher Cassi Kieper went the distance, allowing five runs on 15 hits with one strikeout.

After falling behind 2-0 in the second, the Saints took the lead for good in the top half of the fourth with five runs. Run-scoring hits were collected by Dioszegi (double), Clinton (single), Breinager (triple) and Fair (double).

SHU tacked on three more in the fifth on a sac fly by Dioszegi and, then, Clinton's round-tripper to the right-center field gap.

In the sixth, Shyann Truax had an RBI single and Dioszegi delivered another RBI double.

Bethel answered with their final three runs in the sixth.

Truax had a strong performance in the pitching circle, allowing only one earned run on three hits. She totaled six strikeouts, one walk and one hit batter.

Thelen doubled for the Saints.

SHU's only run was scored on a four-base error as Dioszegi reached on a ball to right field and used her speed for a "Little League home run."

That evened the score at 1-1 in the third until NFC regained the lead in the fifth.

The Saints had a chance to tie in the seventh after Clinton reached on a one-out single. She stole second, but was stranded to end the game.
