Softball Splits With Cleary

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights split a WHAC doubleheader with Cleary on Saturday, dropping the first contest 9-3 and then winning game two, 6-5.

The Saints have a quick turnaround with a home doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Northwestern Ohio.

 

Game one: Cleary 9, Siena Heights 3

Julia Hogston (double) and Faith Breinager (double) had two hits each. Breinager drove in two runs.

Shyann Truax was the starting pitcher, allowing six earnd runs on 11 hits while totaling three strikeouts and one walk.

The Saints scored single runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings. Breinager had an RBI single in the second and an RBI double in the sixth. Ellie Thelen drove in the other run via sacrifice fly during the fifth.

 

Game two: Siena Heights 6, Cleary 5

A sac fly by Avery Schellenberger plated the winning run in the top half of the seventh. SHU's Courtnee Chappetta had reached with a leadoff single before she was lifted for pinch-runner Kennedy Keller, who eventually scored the winner.

Chappetta (double) totaled three hits and two RBI. Hogston, Kat Moreau and Ally Frank added two each. Hogston and Moreau scored twice.

Jordan Green started in the circle and pitched the first 5 1/3 frames, allowing three earned runs on six hits. Truax worked the final 1 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out three batters to earn the win.

The Saints built a 5-1 lead before the host Cougars evened the game at 5-all. Thelen had an RBI single in the first and Moreau and Breinager followed with RBI singles in the third.

A two-run double by Chappetta increased SHU into a 5-1 lead. Cleary came back with a run in the fourth and three in the fifth -- setting the stage for SHU's tiebreaking inning in the seventh.
