Softball Ends Spring Break Trip With Losses to St. Francis (Ind.) and Calumet

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Siena Heights softball team dropped both games on the final day of the spring break trip in Florida. The Saints (6-3) lost a close game to St. Francis (Ind.) 4-3 before falling 8-0 to Calumet to end the day.

Game One: St. Francis (Ind.) def. Siena Heights, 4-3

Sam Hill led offensively with a 3-for-4 outing in game one. Hill brought two runners home—the only two RBIs of the game for SHU—while also scoring a run herself. Sam Spicer had two hits in three at-bats. Jordan Green (L, 3-1) pitched 6.2 innings and surrendered six hits, three earned runs and struck out one Cougar in the losing effort.

The tie was broken in the top half of the first when an error by USF allowed Hill to cross home plate for the 1-0 lead. A two-run home run in the bottom half of the first gave the Cougars the 2-1 lead.

The following three innings were scoreless before the Hill singled in the top of the 5th-inning to bring Lauren Dioszegi home to knot things up at two runs apiece.

A sacrifice fly by St. Francis (Ind.) in the bottom half of the 6th-inning flipped the lead back to 3-2. Hill singled in the top of the 7th-inning to bring Alexis Hirst home and tie the score for the third time.

An error by the Saints with two outs gave the Cougars first base while moving a runner to third. USF hit a walk-off single to seal the 4-3 victory on the ensuing at-bat.

Game Two: Calumet def. Siena Heights, 8-0

Hill (1-for-3), Julia Hogston (1-for-3), Maddie Herrera (1-for-3), Green (1-for-1), and Abby Fisher (1-for-3) each tallied a hit in game two. Shyann Truax (L, 2-1) got the start in the circle for SHU. Truax pitched 6.1 innings and allowed ten hits, five earned runs, and struck out two batters.

In the third inning, the Crimson Wave cracked the scoreboard when a two-out RBI single put the game at 1-0. The next batter hit a three-run home run to increase the lead to 4-0. After an error by SHU, a double scored one final run in the inning as Calumet held a 5-0 lead.

The game was scoreless for the next two, and a half innings before an error by the Saints allowed a sixth run to be put on the board for the Crimson Wave. The Saints bats remained cold through the final two innings as SHU did not threaten in the 8-0 defeat.
