
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Siena Heights men's track and field multi-athlete Holden Van Poppel sits in second place after day one of heptathlon competition on Thursday at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which are being held at the Alachua County Sports and Event Center at Celebration Pointe.
Van Poppel currently has 3,029 points, behind only Midland's Robert Atwater (3,141) after competing in 4 of 7 trials. Van Poppel had the top shot-put performance among heptathletes with a distance of 13.93 meters (724 points).
Van Poppel also was fifth-best in the 60-meter dash (7.14 seconds, 833 points), long jump (6.61m, 723) and high jump (1.94m, 749). He will finish competition in the hep on Friday with the 60 hurdles, 1,000 and pole vault.
SHU's 4x800 relay team also competed Thursday, placing 24th in 8:08.00. Team members were Kyler Pequet, Tyler Landis, Gabe Iott and Blake Schroeder.
The NAIA Championships will continue Friday and finish on Saturday.
