Men's Soccer Open WHAC Play with Double Overtime Win over Cleary

HOWELL, Mich. -- The Siena Heights men's soccer team earnerd their first WHAC contest win of the season after a 2-1 victory against Cleary on Saturday night. Chris Ornelas (Senior, Belding, Mich.) had the game-winning goal.

Records: Siena Heights (4-4, 1-0 WHAC), Cleary (2-3, 0-1 WHAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Saints came out with a point to prove in their first WHAC match of the year as Justin Gray (Senior, Fraser, Mich.) netted a ball past Cougar goalkeeper Juan Gomez (L, 1-2) in the 6:26 minute. The rest of the half would remain deadlock as neither team were able to put any goals on the board and Siena would head to the locker room with the 1-0 lead. The Cougars edged the Saints nine shots to six and five corner kicks to four in the first half.

The majority of the second half remainded at a standstill until David Tetaj scored off an assist from Johnny Cabral in the 78:11 minute to tie the game 1-1. The score would remain there the rest of the half sending both teams to face off in overtime. The Cougars dominated the Saints 12 shots to two and both teams had two corner kicks in the second half.

The score would remain a draw in the first overtime as neither team were able to capatalize on its chances and pushing the game into double overtime. Cleary slightly edged Siena three shots to two and the Saints slightly edged the Cougars one corner kick to zero.

The Saints scored on the only shot of double overtime as Ornelas found the back of the net from a pentaly kick in the 103:06 minute of play to end the game.

TOP SAINTS

• Ornelas scored once on three shots, two of which were on goal. 

• Gray scored once on four shots, two of which were on goal.

Leo Hisamatsu (W, 2-2) had nine saves in the 103 minutes of play to earn the win in net.

THE OPPOSITION

• Tetaj scored once on on six shots, three of which were on goal.

• Cabral recorded an assist.

• Gomez had four saves between the pipes for the Cougars in the 103 minutes of play.

The Saints return home to face Rochester in a WHAC matchup on Wednesday, October 2nd. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 7:00 p.m., EDT.
