Saints Survive in Overtime Thriller

ADRIAN, MICH. -- The Siena Heights men's soccer team earned a 3-2 win in overtime against Goshen (Ind.) Tuesday night. Chris Ornelas (Belding, Mich.) had a game-high of two goals including the game-winning goal in overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Saints first scoring opportunity of the first half came in the 8-minute mark of the first half when Justin Gray made a pass to Gustavo Barros in the box but was saved by Goshen goalkeeper, Tomas Fonseca (0-2). Siena's next scoring opportunity came about in the 19th minute of the first half when Chris Ornelas crossed the ball with a header by Gustavo Barros but resulted being high. SHU finally answered as Alexander Mittag put the Saints on the board with a goal at the 22:58 mark in the first half. The Saints edged the Maple Leafs 10 shots to 6 in the first half.

The Saints first scoring opportunity in the second half came in the 55th minute as Chris Ornelas earned his second goal of the night. Goshen answered back as Matt Granitz scored a goal in the 62 minute of the second half from Lucas Bontrager. The Maple Leafs weren't finished as they quickly scored a goal in the 64th minute of the second half by Lucas Bontrager from Felipe Gallo, which would send both teams into overtime.

The Saints scored on the only shot of overtime just 4:55 in as Ornelas beat his defender to get open and gave a clear shot to put the ball into the net and to end the game after 94:50 of play.

TOP SAINTS

• Ornelas scored twice on eight shots, five of which were on goal. 

Justin Gray and Gustavo Barros each added two shots on goal.

Uthman Babatunde, Artur Becker, and Alexander Mittag each added a shot on goal.

Andrew Kozan (W, 1-0) saved three of the five shots he faced to earn the win in net.

THE OPPOSITION

• Granitz and Bontreger each tallied a goal and led the Maple Leafs with two shots on goal.

• Javier Prieto finished with one shot on goal.

• Tomas Fonseca (L, 0-2) saved eight of the 11 shots he faced in the losing effort.
