LAKE WALES, Fla. -- Day three of the 2022 Spring Trip was the best yet, with the Siena Heights Saints baseball team bringing in two wins for the day, first taking on Grand View University again winning 5-4 in eight innings and then moving on to take down Calumet College in a 9-7 win to finish out the day.
Game 1: Siena Heights 5, Grand View 5 – 8 innings
Parker Mabe led the Saints batting one-for-three while scoring two runs in game one. Haydn Smith brought in one run from his three at-bats. While Cole VanWasshenova went three-for-four on the day, also tallying one run during the game. Adam Wilding also added a run to the books, going one-for-four at the plate. Jarrett Cousino pitched 5.1 innings and struck out three batters, while Ryan Sullivan (W, 1-0) pitched 2.2 innings in relief.
Haydn Smith was first in the order for the Saints and was walked. While on base, Smith stole second as Cole VanWasshenova was also walked. Collin Hammer then singled, allowing VanWasshenova to get to third base and Smith to score. Cameron Winkelman made it to first thanks to an error by Grand View's' second baseman and continued towards second base as VanWasshenova scored. The bottom half of the 2nd-inning saw a run from Mabe off a single from VanWasshenova.
The game continued with a score from the Vikings during the top of the fourth and moved into the bottom of the fifth as a hit from Wilding put him on base, and a hit from Kenny Layman as well as a defensive error allowed for Adam Wilding to add a run to the scoreboard. Grand View scored a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to tie things up at four. VanWasshenova hit a walk-off double that brought Smith home to clinch the win for the Saints.
Game 2: Siena Heights 9, Calumet 7 – 7 innings
Smith, VanWasshenova, and Wilding put up two runs apiece in game two. As Mabe, Jacob Jackson, and Collin Bammer each tallied one run adding together for nine total runs. Bammer went 1-for-2 from the batter's box during the second game of the day. Pitcher Kenny Layman (W, 1-2) saw action in three innings and registered two strikeouts. Luc Olson pitched four innings of relief, only allowing one earned run and striking out two batters.
Smith moved into scoring position after a walk and a steal. Next was VanWasshenova, who reached first on an error and advanced to second base while Smith crossed home plate. However, the Crimson Wave responded with a run of their own during the bottom of the first.
The Saints came to life in the second inning, totaling six runs. It all started when Mabe reached first due to an error, and Jackson earned a base with a walk. Bammer came up to the plate knocking out a single that allowed Mabe to score. With two runners on base, Smith earned an RBI as Jackson scored off his single. The next four batters would reach base thanks partly to Calumet's errors. Nevertheless, Siena Heights saw four scoring runs and jumped up to a lead of 7-1 in the top of the second. The Crimson Wave would score four runs in the bottom of the second, still leaving the Saints in the lead, 7-5.
SHU would score twice more in the top of the fourth, as VanWasshenova reached base only to be brought home by Wilding, who doubled out to right-center. With Wilding advancing to third base thanks to a wild pitch, Hammer stepped up to crack a single out to right-center bringing in Wilding to score, ending the game with a 9-7 win to finish the day a perfect 2-0.
