Women's Volleyball Falls to Cornerstone in WHAC Contest

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's volleyball team (20-10, 8-7 WHAC) hosted Cornerstone in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contest on Saturday. The Saints dropped the match 3-2 with set scores of 25-22, 25-18, 24-26, 12-25 and 13-15.

Paige Hudgin led the SHU offense with 22 kills and added 21 digs. Amanda Metz dished out 47 assists. Metz and Hudgin both also finished with three aces.

Gabrielle Kalugar completed the match with a team high, 34 digs and also three aces. Taylor Felver and Taylor Purcell both assisted on two blocks.

Cornerstone (28-7, 14-1 WHAC) was led by Heather Green with 17 kills and Hope Leppink with 51 assists. Mackenzie Vallad ended the day with 43 digs and Ellie Van Laar was the CU team leader with seven assisted blocks.

SET-BY-SET

Set one: Siena Heights 25, Cornerstone 22
The Saints took off on an early 6-0 run putting the score at 10-4. Not long after, SHU rattled off another 5-0 run and held a 16-9 advantage. Siena Heights was able to hang on and take the set one victory.

Set two: Siena Heights 25, Cornerstone 18
Siena Heights took control from the beginning and was able to maintain control throughout. The Saints went on a 4-0 run before giving up a point to the Golden Eagles, and then capping off a 6-0 run to take a 22-11 lead. Cornerstone was not able to recover.

Set three: Siena Heights 24, Cornerstone 26
Cornerstone was determined to keep the match alive and jumped out early on a 7-0 run making the score 9-2. Siena Heights battled back and eventually tied the score at 21-21 but it was not enough.

Set four: Siena Heights 12, Cornerstone 25
The Golden Eagles quickly pulled away with a 8-0 run and put the Saints at a 13-3 deficit. The hole was too deep for SHU and was not able to pull themselves out.

Set five: Siena Heights 13, Cornerstone 15
Scoring was traded throughout with multiple ties and lead changes. The final tie was at 13-13 when a CU kill gave the Golden Eagles the advantage. Cornerstone scored the final point to take the match win.

Next up, the Siena Heights women's volleyball team will travel to Aquinas on Wednesday, Nov. 2. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
