Women's Volleyball Takes Victory over Aquinas in WHAC Conference Match

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's volleyball team hosted Aquinas in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday. The SHU Saints finished with a victory in five sets. Set scores were 25-17, 29-27, 22-25, 22-25 and 15-12.

Paige Hudgin led the Saints with 23 kills. Hudgin was followed closely by Libby Breton who added 19 kills. Amanda Metz ended the night with 54 assists for SHU.

Gabrielle Kalugar was a top the leader board for Siena Heights with 37 digs. Breton had a strong night, contributing 10 assisted blocks to the Saints stat sheet. 

Aquinas was led by Micaela Hazen with 20 kills and Brooke Wieland with 52 assists. Katlyn Agren completed the match with 29 digs for AC.

SET-BY-SET

Set one: Siena Heights 25, Aquinas 17
Siena Heights was off to a quick start when they went away on an 8-0 run, putting the score at 8-2 early in the set. AC was never able to recover and the SHU Saints pushed the lead to double-digits, at 20-10 and never looked back.

Set two: Siena Heights 29, Aquinas 27
The score was close throughout the match, recording 14 ties. The score was tied for the final time at 27-27. SHU scored the final two points of the set.

Set three: Siena Heights 22, Aquinas 25
Another tight set for the Saints with the largest lead for either team only being three points. Aquinas took their final lead at 21-22 and closed out the set for their first victory of the match.

Set four: Siena Heights 22, Aquinas 25
Points were traded back and forth until AC took off on a 6-0 run and turned a three point deficit into a two point lead. SHU tied the score again at 19-19 but were never able to regain the lead.

Set five: Siena Heights 15, Aquinas 12
The SHU Saints jumped out to 8-3 lead to begin the set. The Aquinas Saints fought back and tied the set at 12-12. But Siena Heights was determined to take the victory and scored the final three points of the match to record the win.

The Siena Heights women's volleyball team will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 8 as they compete in the Adrian College Tri-Match. SHU will take on St. Mary's and Adrian in non-conference match-ups. First serves will take place at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. respectively.
