Women's Volleyball Starts Off Aquinas/Cornerstone Classic With Two Sweeps

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's volleyball team started off the Aquinas/Cornerstone Classic by sweeping Point Park (Pa.) and Rochester both 3-0 on Friday at Aquinas.

In the first match, SHU was led by Leze Vukaj and Alexis McIntosh who had 13 and 11 kills, respectively.

Carly Tillotson finished match one with 26 assists, a pair of kills, two aces and eight digs. Nicole Morgan also had a pair of aces and led the team on defense with 16 digs.  

For Point Park (Pa.) (13-16), Shilo Simonson led the way with nine kills and Nikki Inquartano added eight. Emily Meng finished with 17 assists while Madison Weldon chipped in 13 and Morgan Dangelo finished with 12 digs.

In the second match, Siena Heights was led by Vukaj who had another 13 kill performance on the night. Tillotson finished match two with 34 assists and three aces. Morgan also had three aces and added 18 digs.

For Rochester (20-17), Paige Tenbrink led the way with 10 kills. Emma Walters finished with 16 assists and Kayla Loepp added 16 digs.

MATCH ONE
Set one: Siena Heights 25, Point Park 23
The Saints opened the set with a 4-2 run. The Pioneers tied it at 5-all before the Saints regained the lead and held on to. A kill from Taylor Felver finished set one.

Set two: Siena Heights 25, Point Park 15
SHU opened set two with a 5-2 run and dominated the rest of the set, giving them a 2-0 lead.

Set three: Siena Heights 25, Point Park 15
Siena Heights opened the final set of match one with a 7-4 run and added to their lead with a 7-0 run. SHU finished match one on a 4-0 run, ending with a Rachel Cornish kill.

 

MATCH TWO
Set one: Siena Heights 25, Rochester 19
Siena Heights opened set one by trading runs with Rochester. The set was tied a total of eight time – final one at 11 all – before SHU was able to settle down and take control of the set. Vukaj finished set one with three straight kills.

Set two: Siena Heights 25, Rochester 21
The Saints started set two with a 3-1 run before Rochester matched it giving us the first of seven ties- 4, 8, 12, 13, 18, 20 and 21. SHU went on a 5-0 run to win the set with two aces by Tillotson  for the last two point of the set.

Set three: Siena Heights 25, Rochester 15
SHU jumped on the Warriors early in set three with a 5-1 run. The Warriors would come within one at 9-8 before SHU went on a 7-1 run sailing them to their second victory of the night.

The Siena Heights Saints will face Spring Arbor and Saint Francis (Ind.) tomorrow to finish out the Aquinas/Cornerstone Classic.
