ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's volleyball team won a pair of contests on day one of the Aquinas/Cornerstone Classic, defeating non-conference opponents William Penn (Iowa) and Spring Arbor on Friday. The Saints swept both matches, 3-0 and 3-0.

SHU opened its day, taking sets by scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-20, in the win over William Penn.

Carly Tillotson led the way with eight kills, 21 assists and three aces. Also for SHU, Emily Abbs and Halie Baker had seven kills each, Nicole Morgan made 10 digs, and Mercy smacked three aces.

The Saints took the first set against William Penn, breaking a 4-all tie. During the set, they had a pair of 4-point runs and one 5-point streak.

Then, in the second, SHU fell behind early before enjoying a 12-4 streak to take a 17-12 lead. WPU answered with an 8-1 run to take a 20-19 advantage before SHU closed with seven of the final 10 points.

The Saints never trailed the third set after jumping out to a 5-1 lead. William Penn eventually pulled even at 14-14 and 15-15 before SHU closed with a 10-5 stretch.

Kylie Giger had nine kills for WPU and Leyra Jusino made 21 assists. Danielle Breeher and Kayce Skocko finished with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.

Against Spring Arbor, Baker had 13 kills, Abby Whitehead contributed eight kills, and Tillotson compiled 39 assists and 10 digs.

The Saints never trailed in any of the three sets, which they won 25-17, 25-16, 25-15.

SHU opened the first with a 5-0 run and later added 4- and 6-point streaks. In the second, the Saints opened, 3-0, and then, in the third, they opened, 5-1.

Spring Arbor was led by Courtney Kyser, who had six kills. Laura Hardy added 13 assist and Lyndsay Murray made 12 digs.

While SHU's all-time kills leader, Baker, built on her school record with 1,172 collegiate kills, Tillotson continued to close the gap between herself and the all-time assists leader, Melissa Hall. Tillotson has 2,323 assists -- 110 short of Hall's 2,433 (2006-09).

Siena Heights will be in action again on Saturday at the classic with matches against Goshen (Ind.) and Rochester.
