Women's Soccer Suffer Tough Loss Against (RV) Aquinas

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's soccer team gave up two goals to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opponent Aquinas for a 2-0 defeat, on Wednesday night. Elizabeth Furgason (Freshman, Haslett, Mich.) tallied three shots, one of which was on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Aquinas came out dominating as they put up seven shots compared to SHU's one. Aquinas opened the scoring as Lauryn Deshane netted the ball taking a shot 10 yards out and placed the ball in the top left corner of the goal off a pass from Jenna Smith in the 12th minute. Aquinas had a scoring opportunity in the 16th minute as Reagan Radaz took a shot but it hit the post and SHU caught a break. SHU was unable to find the back of the net in the first half and Aquinas kept the 1-0 lead through the half.

SHU gained momentum on offense in the second half as they put up eight shots and Aquinas put up ten shots. Aquinas had another scoring opportunity in the 49th minute as Smith took a freekick and hit the crossbar and was saved by SHU goalkeeper Sophia Lentz (L, 7-5) off the rebound. SHU would have their first scoring opportunity in the 57th minute as Magali Romero (Senior, Asuncion, Paraguay) had a breakaway and took a shot in front of the box but was blocked by an Aquinas defender. The half remained at a standstill for nearly 15 minutes until Shelby Baxter scored with a header off a corner kick from Macy Hollingsworth in the 73rd minute. SHU would have another scoring opportunity as Furgason had a breakaway but Aquinas goalkeeper Braeleigh McCoy (W, 14-2-1) came out to make the save and fouled giving her a yellow card. SHU was unable to capitalize on the rest of their chances and Aquinas held on for the win.

• Furgason and Erin Tyson (Freshman, Freeland, Mich.) each recorded a shot on goal.

Julia Stancato (Senior, South Lyon, Mich.) tallied three shots.

• Lentz (Senior, Kalamazoo, Mich.) made eight saves between the pipes for SHU.

THE OPPOSITION

• Deshane and Baxter each earned their first goal on the season.

• Smith and Hollingsworth each added an assist to their stat line.

• McCoy made two saves in the winning effort.

WHAC STANDINGS

SHU updates its record to 7-3 in the conference with tallying 21 points and is currently tied with Cornerstone and Madonna for third place. Aquinas remains in second place with one game remaining in conference play.
