Early Goal Propels Women's Soccer to Shut Out Over Lawrence Tech

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's soccer team earned a shut out over Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opponent Lawrence Tech, on Wednesday night. Elizabeth Furgason (Freshman, Haslett, Mich.) scored the Saints' lone goal on the game.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Siena Heights 1, Lawrence Tech 0

Location: Adrian, Mich. (O'Laughlin Stadium)

Records: Siena Heights (10-4-1, 6-2 WHAC), Lawrence Tech (9-5, 5-3 WHAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both teams were in a battle for possession the entire first half as the Blue Devils put up eight shots compared to the Saints' six. SHU opened the scoring as Furgason took a shot 20 yards out and placed the ball in the top left corner in the 13th minute. The rest of the half was neck and neck as both teams had a few scoring opportunities but all came up short and the Saints headed to the locker room with the 1-0 lead.

SHU dominated on possession as they put up eight shots compared to Lawrence Tech's three and set up key scoring opportuintites but were unable to find the back of the net. The Saints defense held strong against the pressing Blue Devil offense as the remainder of the half was a deadlock. The final push for Lawrence Tech was unsuccessful and SHU held on for the win.

TOP SAINTS

• Furgason earned her second goal on the season.

Haylie Curtiss (Junior, Allegan, Mich.) tallied three shots on goal.

Kara Bishop (W, 4-0-1) made three saves in the winning effort for the Saints.

THE OPPOSITION

• Alayne Nyboer had two shots on goal.

• DiOnna Hill tallied three shots.

• Rebecca Almandoz (L, 5-6) made seven saves between the pipes for the Blue Devils

WHAC STANDINGS 

SHU leaped Lawrence Tech in the league standings and now sit in 4th place. The Blue Devils bumped down two spots as they are now in 6th place. The next three games are determinates of where the WHAC tournament will be held as the top four seeds will host.

The Saints travel to face Concordia in a WHAC contest on Friday, October 25th. The game is scheduled to kick off at 4:00 pm, EDT.
