Burkman, Gainer and Bartelotti Headline WHAC Honors; Twelve Named to WHAC Scholar-Athlete Team

Emily Burkman, Alexis Gainer and Samantha Bartelotti were each named First Team All Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference for their efforts in the Siena Heights women's soccer team 2016 season. Twelve Saints were honored as Scholar athletes while three more earned All-WHAC Second Team honors.

Siena Heights ended the regular season 11-5-2 overall and 7-3 in the WHAC, falling to Lawrence Tech, No. 14 Davenport and No. 8 Northwestern Ohio.

Junior center defender Emily Burkman finished out the regular season with four goals and two assists while leading the strong SHU defense. The Saints have allowed only 77 shots on goal and 16 total goals, averaging 0.86 goals per game. Burkman also received this award in the 2015 season.

In the middle, junior Alexis Gainer has earned four assists and three goals for the Saints. As a strong central presence, Gainer makes key tackles and distributes the ball through the middle.

Leading the Saints' scoring is junior forward Samantha Bartelotti who ended the regular season with nine goals and four assists. She also leads the team in shots, 68, shots on goal, 43, and game-winning goals with three. This is the second First Team honor for Bartelotti, her first coming in the 2015 season.

Earning All-Conference Second Team honors was senior Kelsey Schoenberger, sophomores Danielle Eastman and Taylor Mulder.

On defense, Schoenberger made key tackles while adding on a goal and two assists in the regular season.

Danielle Eastman notched four goals and two assists for the Saints at outside midfield.

Forward Taylor Mulder has netted seven goals and added a team-leading six assists for SHU.

Also for the Saints, sophomore midfielder Erin Scheidel was selected to the WHAC Champions of Character Team.

Three seniors and nine juniors were honored as WHAC scholar-athletes, leading the WHAC with 12 total award winners. In order to be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status.

Two-time honorees included seniors Morgan Behn, Gabi Corbin, Emily Loar; and redshirt-juniors Brittany Trout and Gainer. Also receiving the award were juniors Kayla Cardeccia, Taylor Hill, Megan Kennedy, Rebecca Penny, Rachel Sherman and Scheidel.

Future educators may include Behn, Loar and Scheidel who all major in elementary education. Majoring in mathematics is Cardeccia and Corbin--who also majors in accounting.

Focusing in biology is Gainer and Hill. Burkman majors in nursing.

Kennedy is majoring in social work as Sherman majors in psychology. Trout majors in sport management. Penny makes her mark as the sole communications major.
