Saints Finish 7th at WHAC Championships

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Siena Heights men's wrestling team competed at the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Championships in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on Saturday. The Saints compiled a team score of 21.5 for seventh place.

Indiana Tech repeated as WHAC champions with a team score of 173 points. Marian (Ind.) came in second with 164.5. Lourdes claimed third with 129. Cornerstone edged out Rochester for fourth with 64 points while the Warriors totaled 62. Cleary was sixth with 23 points to beat out the Saints.

Christopher Sorrow (8-8) placed fourth at 149 to lead the Saints in the tournament. Sorrow won by a 9-7 decision in the quarterfinal match against Blake Montrie of Lourdes. Sorrow lost by fall at 1:21 to Corey Cavanaugh from Indiana Tech in the semifinal. Sorrow won the consolation semifinals with a 22-19 decision over Christopher Jedding of Lourdes. A fall at 1:45 to Seth Johnson of Marian had Sorrow place fourth in the bracket.

James Huntsman (3-8) finished sixth at 125. Huntsman lost to Anthony Hughes of Marian by a technical fall (15-0) at 3:15. Huntsman faced Alexander Slattman of Lourdes in the consolation semifinals with a fall (0:51). In the fifth-place match, a fall to Jacob Simone of Marian put Huntsman sixth in the weight class.

WHAC Champions of Character member Luke Tuinstra (4-7) was sixth at 165. He lost by fall (0:39) to Elliott Rodgers from Marian before losing by fall at 4:28 to Jordan Fulks from Marian in the consolation semifinal. Ronald Solis from Rochester defeated Tuinstra by fall in the fifth-place match.

Matthew Cepak (2-10) placed sixth at heavyweight. He lost his first match by fall in 1:34. In the consolation semifinal round, Cepak faced Brendan Mahar from Cornerstone. The match ended by fall at 2:20, and Cepak moved to the fifth-place match. Cepak finished his day with a loss by fall at 1:25 to Cody Mies from Lourdes.

Justin Miller competed for Siena in the 141 weight class. Miller lost his first match by fall at 1:52. In the second round of the consolation bracket, Miller defeated Dante Wurster from Cornerstone in a 9-4 decision before ending his afternoon with an 11-5 loss to Ryan Weaver from Cleary.
