Women's Lacrosse Out in the Community

The Siena Heights Women's Lacrosse Team spent several hours at the Two Wild Hearts Sanctuary on September 22 helping out with various projects.

Two Wild Hearts Sanctuary has a mission to help every at-risk equine we can through rescue or private surrender. We provide medical and emotional rehabilitation as well as any training needed. Our goal is to find each and every horse a new, loving home through our adoption process. The Sanctuary has a diverse team of equine professionals and volunteers run by a board of directors, who work endlessly to impact the lives of every horse that comes through our welcoming doors. We know we can't save every horse, but for the fortunate few that we can, their lives are completely changed. We believe that every horse, no matter it's past or future, deserves respect, kindness and love.

The almost 20 acre sanctuary consists of a large horse barn, including three broodmare stalls and three quarantine stalls.  There are two round pens with a third in their plans.  There are seven large pastures and a huge run-in that has direct access from several of the pastures.  Their hay is stored in the barn which has a tack room, feed room, office, and restroom.

Two Wild Hearts Sanctuary owns multiple pieces of equipment useful in their day-to-day function of sheltering and caring for horses.  As soon as horses arrive, they are placed in a quarantine period.  Each horse is taken care of and within several days they have had a vet assessment and have had normal vet care.  The transformation in their tired bodies and the light they see coming back into the horses' eyes is what makes all the hard work worth every ache, pain, sweat and bucket of tears.

During their time at the sanctuary, the Saints worked cleaning out stall, moving hay, cleaning up broken fences and branches from the latest storm and cleaning out the horse, donkey, and goat water tubs.  They also helped to groom horses and helped to walk the horses so they could graze the grass.

Head Coach Alexa Matta stated, "This is such a great opportunity for our team. Julia Tar, our school Massage Therapist, put us in contact with Jane at Two Hearts two years ago and we have been helping out there ever since! The girls look forward to getting off campus for a bit and loving on the horses. The best part is a handful of the girls find additional days throughout the year to help out and visit the horses they become attached to. I believe it's become a nice little break from being a "student athlete" for them."
