Saints Overcome Aquinas in WHAC Semifinals

 ADRIAN, Mich. – RV Siena Heights women's lacrosse hosted RV Aquinas College in the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Semifinal game at home in O'Laughlin Stadium on Thursday, April 21st. SHU finished the game with a 24-14 victory over the visiting Saints to move onto the WHAC Championship game against No.1 Lawrence Tech.

Leading, for the home team, was Emily Pringle, who shot 5-for-5 on the night, netting five goals, and picking up two ground balls. Marissa Cirino found the back of the netting five times, tallying four ground balls, one caused turnover, and 12 draw controls. Courtney Frankfurth (5-for-9) added five points to the board, along with two ground balls and five draw controls. Alexis Kuhns shot .750 during the game, sinking three goals and picking up three ground balls. Hannah Merrick earned three goals shooting 3-for-5 from the field and tallied two ground balls. Madison Spell found the back of the net twice, matching her two assists and two ground balls. Catherine Androwski scored once and collected two ground balls. Shelby Mueller held one assist and caused one turnover during her time on the field. Goalie Emily Durr saved six shots on goal during her 60 minutes of action.

Siena Heights found a quick lead after scoring near the 7-minute mark in the first quarter. The hometown Saints would make a run of four late in the quarter, propelling the lead to 7-2. Aquinas came into the second hot and scored two quick goals. However, Frankfurth would end the run with her 30th goal of the season, and start another SHU run of five. Spell and Pringle each sunk a goal apiece to end the half with a score of 14-5 

Aquinas was the first to score in the third but was quickly thwarted, by two man-up goals from Frankfurth and Androwski. The two teams traded points back and forth nearing the end of the quarter. When Kuhns netted back-to-back goals earning her 30th goal of the season, sending the game into the final 15 minutes.

The fourth quarter saw five goals for each team as Aquinas made a late push to close the gap. A strong defensive showing from the Durr and the Saints held off Aquinas, as Cirino found the back of the goal. Netting three man-up goals in the last three minutes of the game, earning her 50th goal of the season to close the game 24-14 sending SHU to the championship.
